The Weekend Box Office Round-up

This weekend the Tom Holland actioner, Uncharted, posted another terrific hold, falling just 18% to £3.1m, which takes its total to £18.1m. While The Batman is likely to dominate from Friday, Uncharted should still sail past $20m. It’s worth remembering that little over a month ago it looked like Sony’s Uncharted might suffer in the shadow of Morbius. Once again, Sony’s decision to move Morbius to April looks a shrewd one. Just a reminder that here’s the box office of other recent live-action video game adaptations: Assassin’s Creed (£8m), Tomb Raider (£7.7m), and Warcraft (£6.1m).

Sing 2 stayed in second but posted an even better hold than Uncharted, falling just 16% to £2.7m. That takes its total to over £29m and it’s now less than £500k behind the final total of the first Sing (£29.5m). It will overtake it in the next week, which is a terrific result. Just a reminder that an animated film hasn’t posted these kind of numbers since Frozen II in December 2019.

The Duke was this weekend’s highest new entry, opening with £993k, which includes £50k from previews. The last time Jim Broadbent was in a Roger Michell film was 2013’s Le Week-End, which opened with £324k and finished on £1.4m, so this has vastly improved upon that. Another film aimed at an older audience, Death On The Nile came in fourth, adding £764k for a new total of £6.5m. Channing Tatum’s Dog completed the top five, adding £651k, a drop of 21% from last weekend, which takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £2.1m.

Outside of the top five, Spider-Man: No Way Home continued its remarkable run in sixth, falling just 10% to £579k, and is now up to £95.4m. That means it has overtaken the final total of SPECTRE and is now the fourth highest grossing film in UK history. Madness. Cyrano opened in seventh with £399k, which includes £134k from previews. Director Joe Wright has been accustomed to box office success with Darkest Hour and Atonement, but this looks like rivalling 2009’s The Soloist as his worst performing film. Finally, in 10th spot, The Godfather had a successful 50th anniversary re-release, opening with £267k.

Overall the box office was down 9% from last weekend.

Next Weekend

  • The Batman is the latest iteration of the caped crusader. Robert Pattinson stars, alongside Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, and Colin Farrell. When the Riddler, a sadistic serial killer, begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement.
  • Ali & Ava is the latest drama from Clio Barnard (The Arbor, The Selfish Giant). BAFTA-nominated for Best Actor, Adeel Akhtar stars alongside Claire Rushbrook as Ali and Ava, who are both lonely for different reasons, but they meet and sparks fly. Death On The Nile came in fourth, adding $4.5m for a new total of $32.8m, and Jackass Forever completed the top five, adding $3.2m for a new total of $52.1m.
