The Weekend Round-up
Kung Fu Panda 3 earned the top spot this week, opening with £4.9m including £1.56m from previews. This marks the lowest overall opening of the trilogy, down on Kung Fu Panda 2’s £6.2m and Kung Fu Panda’s £6.1m. In terms of Fri-Sun tallies though, Kung Fu Panda 3’s £3.17m is ahead of Kung Fu Panda 2’s £3.07m, although still down on the first film’s £4.38m.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant opened in second with £1.8m, which includes £262k from previews.
London Has Fallen fell to third, but another £1.8m takes it to a cume of £6.4m, overtaking Olympus Has Fallen’s £6.1m. It now stands a decent chance to hit the £10m mark.
Deadpool dropped to fourth, with £966,484, to reach a total cume of £35.8. It should still be able to overtake Iron Man 3’s £37m as the fifth biggest superhero film of all time.
Hail, Caesar! completed the top five, dropping 35% in its second week, taking £863k to sit on £3.2m. The Coen Brothers’ latest film will soon overtake O Brother, Where Are Thou?’s £3.32m as the duo’s fifth best UK performer.
Outside of the top five, new entries The Witch and Anomalisa opened in 7th and 10th respectively. The Witch conjured up £448k, while Curzon Artificial Eye’s Anomalisa recorded a £223k debut.
Overall, the box office was up 26% from last weekend and up 94% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Home, Run all Night and Focus.

10 Cloverfield Lane sees Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wake up to find herself in an underground bunker with two men after surviving a car accident. Howard (John Goodman) tells her that a massive chemical attack has rendered the air unbreathable, and their only hope of survival is to remain inside. Uncertain what to believe, the woman soon determines that she must escape at any cost.
High-Rise - Laing, a young doctor, joins a community in a luxury building in Thatcher's England, who exile themselves from society and gradually divide into violent tribes.
The Boy is a frightening thrill ride directed by William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside) starring Lauren Cohan ("The Walking Dead"). Greta (Cohan) is a young American woman who takes a job as a nanny in a remote English village, only to discover that the family's 8-year-old is a life-sized doll that the parents care for just like a real boy, as a way to cope with the death of their actual son 20 years prior. After violating a list of strict rules, a series of disturbing and inexplicable events bring Greta's worst nightmare to life, leading her to believe that the doll is actually alive.
The Buzz
Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice – The superhero stand-off the world has been waiting for arrives in cinemas at the end of the month. Zack Snyder returns as director following the huge success of 2013's Man of Steel, along with Henry Cavill in the role of Superman. Also starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an explosive, action-packed blockbuster that is sure to thrill DC fans everywhere.
Across The Pond
Zootopia (Zootropolis in the UK) stayed perched at the top of the US box office, adding $51.3m for a total of $144m. 10 Cloverfield Lane opened in second with $24.7m. Deadpool maintained its third spot, adding $10.9m for a new total of $328m. London Has Fallen fell to fouth, adding $10.8m for a total of $39m during its second week and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot completed the top five, adding $4.7m for a total of $14.6m.
