The Weekend Round-up

Dwayne Johnson is once again King of the box office as Rampage opened in the top spot. The second video game adaptation in a month, after Tomb Raider, opened with £4.1m, which includes £954k from Wednesday and Thursday previews. This is the second time Johnson and director, Brad Peyton have teamed up to wreak havoc on a city, the first time being with 2015’s San Andreas. That film opened with £4.6m, which included £740k from previews, so a similar number to Rampage

The unthinkable has happened and Peter Rabbit has out-performed the beloved Paddington at the UK box office. Beatrix Potter’s most famous creation added £2m across the weekend, which was enough to take it to £38.1m and past the first Paddington’s final total of £37.9m. It’s a sensational performance from Peter Rabbit and it has laid down a great marker to the rest of 2018’s family films.

After a great opening last weekend, horror hit, A Quiet Place, delivered a terrific second weekend falling just 4% (once previews are removed) to £1.9m. That takes its total to £6.4m and it looks likely to follow in Get Out and Split’s footsteps and crack the £10m mark.

Ready Player One fell one place to fourth, dropping a chunky 51% this weekend to £1.2m. That takes its total to £14.5m and it is now the ninth biggest film of 2018 to date and will climb a place or two further before the end of its run.

On a decent week for horror, Blumhouse chiller Truth Or Dare opened in fifth with £931k. That’s a solid performance in the face of A Quiet Place and is pretty similar to Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day, which opened with £998k just before Halloween last year and finished its run with £2.9m.

Outside of the top five, Isle Of Dogs crossed the £5m mark in eighth and Black Panther is edging towards £50m, having added £453k across the weekend for a new cume of £49.5m.

Overall, the box office was down 3% from last weekend and down 42% from the same weekend last year, when the top films were Fast & Furious 8, The Boss Baby, Beauty And The Beast and Peppa Pig: My First Cinema Experience.

The Buzz

Ocean’s 8 looks like the perfect antidote to the wall-to-wall football on television during the World Cup. Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, who gathers a crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's yearly Met Gala. It’s a spin-off from the Ocean’sfranchise, which started with Ocean’s Eleven in 2002 and co-stars Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham-Carter and Rihanna. Ocean’s Eleven grossed an impressive £26.5m when it was released so hopes are high for this new entry and a new trailer launched last week, which can be found here: https://youtu.be/n5LoVcVsiSQ.
