The Weekend Round-up

Solo: A Star Wars Story posted a solid hold this weekend, falling 35% to £3.1m. That takes its total to £13.9m.

Deadpool 2 posted an even better hold than Solo: A Star Wars Story, falling 33% to £2.5m. It had a strong half-term week last week and has reached £26.7m. It’s now the fifth biggest film of 2018 so far and the fourth biggest film released this year (The Greatest Showman was released in 2017). It looks certain to get to £30m.

Avengers: Infinity War added £1.1m in third, a drop of just 13%. That takes its total to £68.8m and it has now overtaken Mamma Mia’s final total of £68.7m to become the tenth biggest film in UK history. Next in its sights is Beauty and the Beast in ninth spot with £72.4m, but that could be just out of reach for Infinity War.

Sherlock Gnomes posted another great hold, increasing on last weekend by 36% to £937k, thanks in part to a strong half-term week. It’s now on £7.1m and with now family film released until Incredibles 2 on 13 July it should have a few more weekends in it yet.

This weekend’s highest new entry was Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton comedy Book Club, which kicked off its run with £721k, which includes £25k from previews. A similar title would be 2012 Meryl Streep comedy Hope Springs, which opened with £729k. That film went on to gross £4.1m by the end of its run so hopefully Book Club can achieve something similar.

Outside of the top five, Show Dogs increased on last weekend’s total by 10% adding £600k. That takes its 10 day total to £2.2m.

Overall, the box office was down 24% from last weekend and down 38% from the same weekend last year, when the top films were Wonder Woman, Baywatch, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge and Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.

Next Weekend

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a sequel to one of the biggest films in UK history. When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Jurassic World grossed over £64m in 2015.

The Buzz

Adrift is a new adventure film from Everest director Baltasar Kormákur starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. Based on a true story, a young couple's chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. It opened in the US last weekend to solid reviews and it delivered $11.5m in its opening weekend. It’s out in the UK on 29 June.

Across The Pond

Solo: A Star Wars Story took a bit of a tumble on its second weekend, falling 65% to $29.4m. That was enough to top the box office though and takes its total to $149m. Deadpool 2 stayed in second, falling 47% to $23.2m and a new total of $254.5m. Adrift was the highest new entry, opening in third with $11.6m and Avengers: Infinity War came in fourth, adding $10.5m for a new total of $643m. Book Club completed the top five, adding $7m for a new total of $47.6m.
