On another positive weekend for cinema, the total box office crossed the £1m mark for the first time since cinemas re-opened, reaching over £1.1m, while DCM admissions were up over 40% from last weekend. Comscore isreporting that there were 377 cinemas open in the UK and Ireland this past weekend (up from 350 last weekend), with 326 of them in the UK (up from 304), with occupancy on the DCM estate up over 30% from last weekend.

Ahead of the hugely anticipated release of Tenet next Wednesday (26 August), this past weekend was the perfect time to re-visit one of Christopher Nolan’s best-loved films, Inception, which has had a big 10th anniversary re-release and secured the top spot. For the third weekend in succession, Russell Crowe’s Unhinged was the highest grossing film over the weekend, but lost out on three successive top spots due to Inception’s previews, so had to park in second. It’s now the ninth highest grossing release ever for the excellent distributor, Altitude, who saw an opportunity for success with the lack of big new releases.

Matteo Garrone’s live-action adaptation of Pinocchio secured third spot and for the first time since late-February, Onward isn’t in the top two films at the box office, with Pinocchio pushing it down to fourth. Another family title, 100% Wolf completed the top five.

The only other new entries in this weekend’s top 15 were the Irish drama, Broken Law, which is playing in Irish cinemas and came in and the critically lauded Australian drama, Babyteeth, which opened in eighth.

Overall the top 15 grossed £898k, which is up 113% from last weekend.
