DCM caught up with Mike Wiles, Operations Manager of G1 Group about his favourite film, the industry's biggest challenges and what makes his cinema unique.
How did you end up in the world of cinema and what do you love about it?
I saw an advert in my local cinema saying if you would like to work here speak to the manager, which I did and was hired the following week. 30 years later I am still in the business I fell in love with all those years ago
Tell us a bit about your business/what’s unique about your cinema(s)?
G1 has the oldest surviving cinema in Glasgow at the Grosvenor, the only Independent Imax in Scotland and our most recent cinema is the stunning Scotsman Picturehouse within the iconic 5-star Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh
Do you run any special events/screenings at your cinema?
We regularly host Q and A’s most recently for Beats with the film cast and crew
What excites you most about the future of the cinema industry?
Bringing more Live events to the big screen opens up a whole new world to people who would normally not get to experience a live concert atmosphere such as Take That or Andre Reiu
What do you see as the cinema industry’s biggest challenge?
The cinema industry in 2019 is heavily reliant on established franchises and superhero movies. We need new and original content if we are to compete with the likes of Netflix and the other streaming services.
Who do you most admire in the cinema industry, and why?
The late Stanley Kubrick was a visionary Film maker whose movies work on a number of levels thanks to his meticulous attention to detail.
What is your favourite film and why?
For me Blade Runner had everything, stunning visuals, fantastic story, top cast, and a memorable soundtrack. Blade Runner was the film that convinced me that rather than being an avid cinema goer, I wanted to be part of the movie industry. Not being talented or creative enough to be a film director, I decided to opt for a career in cinema management
What are you most excited about for the rest of the year and what film are you most looking forward to?
G1 have just launched its latest cinema inside the iconic Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh. Our dinner and movie packages offer guests an experience befitting of the 5-star environment of the Scotsman Hotel. Film most looking forward to is Joker, this promises to take the DC Universe into a much more original and darker place.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Don’t expect anyone to do something that you wouldn’t be prepared to do yourself. You can’t effectively delegate until you know how the task you want to delegate will impact on someone.
