The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the biggest cinema franchise of all time, taking over £1bn at the UK box office alone (source: IBOE). Phase 5 of the universe kicks off this February with one of its three big films of 2023: Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.
Release Date: 17 February 2023
Director: Peyton Reed
Cast: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer
Est. industry admissions: 2.8m
16-34 Male TVRs: 13
Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame, Clueless) and Evangeline Lilly (Avengers: Endgame, The Hurt Locker) return as the title heroes, but this time they’re faced with a new villain, in Kang The Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors (Creed 3, The Harder They Fall). This character will be the primary villain in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, set to release in 2025.
For this reason, Marvel fans are expected to be more eager to see this title than the previous Ant-Man films, which have never played too heavily into the over-arching MCU. Brands looking for a strong 16-34 / 16-34 male-skewing audience need not look any further than this, the first superhero blockbuster of the year.
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are more likely to be young, male and ABC1. They often have an interest in gaming and technology, and 60% have no children in their household. This audience also likes to spend their money on food, motors and retail, particularly online. The average Marvel fan spent £491 on online shopping in the past year, nearly £100 more than the average UK adult (source: TGI GB Oct 2022).
Last year, four Marvel sequels featured in the top 10 movies of the year in the UK:
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (4.8m DCM admissions, 21.2 16-34 male TVRs)
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3.8m DCM admissions, 21.1 16-34 male TVRs)
- Thor: Love and Thunder (3.5m DCM admissions, 17.2 16-34 male TVRs)
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2.8m DCM admissions, 18.3 16-34 male TVRs)
Based on these achievements of films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2022, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania should have no problem achieving high admission numbers and 16-34 male TVRs.
