It’s no exaggeration to say that this year we have potentially the biggest Q2 in history. The big films start arriving in late-April and in the space of four weeks we have three bona-fide mega blockbusters. The Avengers return for their biggest adventure yet as they finally take on the might of Thanos. A superhero of a very different kind returns in the middle of May and at the end of the month, the second Star Wars Anthology film focusses on the series’ most popular character. In between those two behemoths we have the return of a charming British animation.
Avengers: Infinity War
Target audience: 16-34 Men
The third Avengers film is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most eagerly anticipated films of 2018. This huge blockbuster sees the Avengers and their allies go up against the all powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe. One of the biggest all-star casts in history has assembled in what will get the summer off to an incredible start. With both Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age Of Ultron grossing £50m in the UK, expect Infinity War to do the same.
Release date: 27 April 2018

Deadpool 2
Target audience: 16-34 Men
Deadpool was the shot in the arm the superhero genre needed. A daring, irreverent, violent, action film that was very funny and finally gave Ryan Reynolds the snarky lead-role his talent deserved. It shot from almost nowhere to over £38m in the UK and almost $800m worldwide. The merc-with-the-mouth is back and he’s got some help from Julian Dennison, who gave one of the funniest comic performances of the last few years in Hunt For The Wilderpeople. I’m not sure what I’m more excited for, more Wade Wilson or more Ricky Baker, either way, it’s unmissable.
Release date: 18 May 2018

Solo: A Star Wars Story
Target audience: 16-34 Men
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story kicked off the new Star Wars Anthology series in fine style and the second film in the series explores the back story of the most popular character in the whole Star Wars universe, Han Solo. Alden Ehrenreich looks like great casting, and Donald Glover was surely the top of everyone’s lists for Lando Calrissian. Ron Howard directs and we can also expect the visual effects to be up to the incredible eye-popping standard that Disney and Lucasfilm have set so far. Solo: A Star Wars Story is a good bet to be the biggest film of 2018.
Release date: 25 May 2018

Sherlock Gnomes
Target audience: Family
Gnomeo and Juliet was a funny British animation that charmed its way to £16m at the UK box office in 2011. For this follow-up, garden gnomes, Gnomeo and Juliet, recruit renowned detective, Sherlock Gnomes, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of other garden ornaments. A well-liked original film joins forces with one of the most popular literary characters in history. It will be brought to life by an all-star cast and it should be one of the biggest animated films of the summer.
