Prisoners refused to relinquish its iron grip on the top spot this weekend past, holding on to number one for the third week in a row. The all-star thriller took £969k, bringing its cume to a fantastic £5m.

Hot on the heels of Prisoners was Sunshine on Leith, which on its second week of release, took £732k and now has a cume of £2.2m . The film, featuring music from pop-folk sensation, The Proclaimers, follows the stories of Davy and Ally, who have to re-learn how to live life in Edinburgh after coming home from serving in Afghanistan. Both struggle to learn to live a life outside the army and to deal with the everyday struggles of family, jobs and relationships.

Woody Allen helmed comedy/drama, Blue Jasmine took third place, with £642k for the weekend and a total cume of £3.3m after three weeks in cinemas.

Fourth and fifth place were filled by Filth and Rush respectively. Filth brought in £639k, taking its cume to £2.5m and Rush followed with £531k and now has a cume of £8.9m.

Overall, the box office was down 40% from the same weekend last year, when Liam Neeson was using his “very particular set of skills” to dispatch vengeful human traffickers in Taken 2.

Across the pond, Gravity held on to the pole position, taking $44.2m, bringing its cume to date to £123.4m. Captain Phillips took second place, bringing in $26m in its first week of release. The audience for Captain Phillips was 52% male and 62% over the age of 35, which is nearly identical to Gravity's demographics from last weekend.

Sony Animation romp, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2: Revenge Of The Leftovers easily took the third spot with $14.2m in its third week of release in the US, bringing the cume to $78m. Machete Kills opened with a disappointing $3.8m and Runner Runner rounded out the top five with $3.7m, taking its cume to $14.1m.
