UK Box Office 22 - 24 February 2013

He may been knocked off his perch last weekend but he made it back to the top a week later, Wreck-It Ralph 3D eased less than 1% to £3.4m and a hugely impressive cume of £18.6m. It’s only a matter of time before Ralph overtakes Tangled’s final total of £20.5m and closes in on Brave’s £22.6m.

A Good Day To Die Hard fell 50% (not including previews) to £1.6m and dropped to second place in the process. It now has a cume of £8.2m and it’s going to have a hard time overtaking Die Hard 4.0’s final total of £13.9m. Creepy horror Mama was the highest new entry, in third place with £1.5m. That’s an improvement over both Insidious’ and Sinister’s £1.4m debuts in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Both those films went on to gross over £6m.

For the seventh successive weekend, Les Misérables ended up in the top four, this time managing £765k for a cume of £37.8m.

Brit comedy, I Give It A Year, rounded out the top five with £632k and a cume of £5.1m. Just outside the top five, somewhat disappointingly, was the hugely ambitious Cloud Atlas, which achieved £541k on its first outing. Overall, the box office was down 27% from last weekend and flat on the same weekend last year when The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Safe House were on release.

In the US, Identity Thief moved back to the top spot, despite easing 41% to $14.1m. After 17 days, the Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy comedy has grossed $93.7m. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson actioner, Snitch, opened in second place with $13m and the audience was 53% male and 57% were over the age of 30.

Family animation, Escape From Planet Earth, went up one place to third thanks to a strong hold with $11m for a 10-day total of $35.1m. Safe Haven fell 51% to $10.6m and now has a cume of $48.1m. A Good Day To Die Hard completed the top five, falling 60% to $10m and a cume of $51.8m.
