Prisoners held on tightly to the top spot this week on a weekend when the most impressive performers were holdovers from last weekend.  The intense Hugh Jackman crime drama had a strong hold, falling just 17% to £1.1m (once previews are removed) and now has a cume of £3.4m. It held off the might of two Scottish releases in Filth and Sunshine On Leith, which finished in second and third respectively.

Based on the Irvine Welsh novel, Filth expanded nationwide this weekend and as a consequence saw an increase of 240% to £842k. The abrasive comedy now has a cume of £1.3m. The songs of The Proclaimers are still popular with the public as Scottish musical, Sunshine On Leith opened with £767k.

In fourth spot, Blue Jasmine was another strong performer, falling a measly 9% (once previews are removed) to £725k and a cume of £2.2m. It’s certain to finish as Woody Allen’s highest grossing film, eclipsing Midnight In Paris’ final total of £2.8m, and with Cate Blanchett’s awards prospects being talked up, it should beat that total comfortably. Rush completed the top five with £709k for a cume of £7.9m.

A couple of new entries disappointed, opening in the lower reaches of the top 15. Saoirse Ronan drama How I Live Now was the biggest disappointment opening in 12th with £232k, despite opening in 349 locations. Starry comedy drama Thanks For Sharing was one place lower with £189k from 329 locations.

In the US, Gravity opened with $55.6m, which is the highest ever October debut, beating 2011's Paranormal Activity 3 ($52.6m). It's also the highest opening ever for stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. The audience was 46% female and 59% over the age of 35, while 80% of its gross came from 3D presentations.

Second place was taken by Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which fell 37% to $21.5m and after 10 days has grossed a solid $60.6m. It may have come in third, but Runner Runner disappointed this weekend with just $7.6m. In fourth, Prisoners fell 48% to $5.7m and now has a cume of $47.9m. Rush completed the top five, falling a chunky 56% to $4.4m and now has a cume of $18.1m.
