Box Office Round-up
Another music biopic has opened at the top of the box office as A Complete Unknown, James Mangold’s biopic of Bob Dylan, kicked off its run with an impressive £2.6m. It's the second biggest opening weekend of 2025 to date.
Mufasa: The Lion King fell to second, adding £1.6m, down just 26% from last weekend. That takes its total after five weekends in cinemas to £26.2m. It has now overtaken the final total of 2019’s Dumbo, which finished its run on £25.1m. It’s now just £1.2m behind 2023’s The Little Mermaid, which it should surpass over the next week.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 added £1.1m in third, which takes its total to £22.3m. It has surpassed the £19.3m total of the first Sonic The Hedgehog, and is edging closer to the £27m Sonic The Hedgehog 2 finished on.
Nosferatu continued its terrific box office run, adding £1.1m over the weekend which was enough to see it cross the £10m mark in fourth, and it now sits on £10.9m. In terms of horror films last year, it has now surpassed A Quiet Place: Day One (£10m) and is closing in on Alien: Romulus (£13.4m).
We Live In Time rounded out the top five, adding £863k, down 36% from last weekend. That takes its total after 19 days in cinemas to £6.8m and it has now surpassed another moving British drama that hit cinemas last January, in All Of Us Strangers (£5.3m).
Outside of the top five, Wolf Man opened with a disappointing £654k in seventh place. Director Leigh Whannell (along with James Wan) created the Saw and Insidious franchises, and his directing career had got off to a great start too, with 2020’s excellent The Invisible Man finishing its run (early, due to covid) with £6.9m. Sadly Wolf Man has not been as warmly received and won’t be replicating that film’s success.
Moana 2 in eighth added £654k which was enough to cross the £40m mark. Wicked in ninth place added £543k for a new total of £59.6m. That means it has now overtaken the final total of Inside Out 2 (£59.4m) to become the highest grossing film released in 2024.
Next Weekend
The Brutalist is an epic film about a visionary architect and his wife who flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern United States. Their lives are changed forever by a mysterious, wealthy client. It’s a genuine contender for the Oscar and BAFTA best picture and stars Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce.
Presence is the latest film from Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s trilogy, Traffic, Erin Brockovich) and the first of two films he has out in Q1. A family becomes convinced they are not alone after moving into their new home in the suburbs.
Flight Risk stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshal accompanying a fugitive to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.
The Buzz
The Legend Of Ochi is a fantasy drama from A24. In a remote village, a young girl is raised to never go outside after dark and fear the reclusive forest creatures known as the ochi. When a baby ochi is left behind by its pack, she embarks on an adventure to reunite it with its family. This has the feel of a classic 80s adventure, in the vein of E.T: The Extra Terrestrial, and The Goonies. The cast includes Willem Dafoe, Helena Zengel, Emily Watson, and Finn Wolfhard, and it should be a great way to reach all ages in March. It’s in cinemas on 7 March.
Across The Pond
On a quiet MLK holiday weekend, One Of Them Days opened in the top spot with $11.6m. Mufasa: The Lion King stayed in second, just behind, adding $11.5m, down 19% from last weekend, which takes its total to $205.8m. Wolf Man opened in third with a disappointing $10.6m, while Sonic The Hedgehog 3 came in fourth adding $8.6m for a new total of $216.5m. Den Of Thieves: Pantera rounded out the top five, adding $6.6m for a new total of $26.2m.
