Cannes Lions 2016 preview: DCM’s top 10 things to see

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity takes place next week (18-25 June) when the global advertising and communications industry flock to the South of France for eight days of inspiration in the form of talks, interactive sessions and hands-on workshops in and around the Palais des Festivals.

With more media agencies, owners and advertisers attending the event each year, the agenda continues to grow so it’s wise to arrive with a loose plan to get the most out of the biggest event on the international ad calendar.

Below, DCM offers 10 essential sessions with film in mind kicking off with a seminar on the power of cinema in today’s world and bringing the agenda to a close with the final awards ceremony of 2016 at the end of the week.

 

1. The Power of Cinema to Drive Cultural Change

Lumiere Theatre, 10am Monday 20 June

SAWA, the Global Cinema Advertising Association, will host a seminar on The Power of Cinema to Drive Cultural Change that will see BBH Founder, Sir John Hegarty, take to the stage to discuss the subject with three other world-class speakers. Founder and Managing Partner of Anonymous Content, Steve Golin; Lawrence Bender, Producer and Activist, Bender Productions; Claudia Gonzalez, Chief of Public Advocacy, UNICEF; and Film Critic, Broadcaster and Author, Jason Solomons, will join Hegarty on the panel.

2. The Pursuit of Impact: Edelman in Conversation with Will Smith

Lumiere Theatre, 11am Tuesday 21 June

Two-time Academy Award nominee and Grammy Award-winning recording artist Will Smith will dissect what’s needed for global brand success in a career that has spanned film, television, and music.

3. StarTrek Beyond: Retelling an Iconic Story for a New Generation

Lumiere Theatre, 10am Wednesday 22 June

Star Trek stars Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Chris Pine explore creative processes and how to bring new life to old stories.

4. Stephen Sackur Interviews Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow at 1pm, Wednesday 22 June

Gwyneth Paltrow, Oscar-winning actress, singer and owner of health and wellness platform Goop will face probing questions from BBC HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur.

5. Lunch is for Wimps: In Conversation with Oliver Stone

Lumiere Theatre, Wednesday 22 June at 2pm

Multi-Oscar winning director, screenwriter and producer, Oliver Stone, will share his views on filmmaking, politics and culture with the Guardian.

6. Ogilvy & Inspire: Oscar-winning Director Alejandro González Iňárritu

Thursday 23 June at 2pm

Acclaimed director Alejandro G Iñárritu, winner of successive awards for films Birdman and The Revenant, will discuss making mould-breaking cinema with Tham Khai Meng, Co-Chairman, Worldwide Chief Creative Officer, Ogilvy & Mather.

7. Spike Jonze & Spike Smith: Making Content We Care About

Limiere Theatre, 5pm on Thursday 23 June

Director, producer and co-president of VICELAND Spike Jonze will talk about creating content that matters to young audiences, while Steve Golin explores the power of cinema to drive change.

8. Beyond the Big Screen: The Future of Storytelling in Hollywood

Lumiere Theatre, 11am Friday 24 June

One of Hollywood’s most-awarded storytellers and visionaries Harvey Weinstein in discussion with Maurice Lévy Chairman, CEO, Publicis Groupe, will take a deeper look at the future of film and ask what the bridge between entertainment and advertising will look like. 

9. Martin Campbell CASINO ROYALE in conversation

Inspiration Stage, Friday 24 June at 2pm

Martin Campbell, best known for directing Bond movies Golden Eye and Casino Royale who will talk about his experience of integrating brands into his work.

10. Integrated, Titanium, Film Craft and Film Lions Awards Ceremony

Lumiere Theatre, 7pm Saturday 25 June

Attend the final awards ceremony of the week to find out who has won what in the esteemed Film and Film Craft categories and enjoy the winning work on the big screen inside the Palais des Festivals ahead of the 2016 Closing Gala.
