2009 continues to be the year for cinema

Latest Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) figures show cinema admissions are continuing to climb, with 13.5million cinemagoers heading to the big screen in October alone. The new figure marks a year-on-year increase of 3.8 per cent and ranks as the strongest October for cinema admissions in four years.

To date, the overall cinema admissions for 2009 stand at 142.3 million, a 2.7 per cent increase on the same period in 2008. Computer- animated comedy-adventure film UP, which was released in 3D in 261 sites, was the number one cinema release for October.Raking in almost £28m since its release on October 9th, the film took an impressive five times more than the second most successful film of the month, The Invention of Lying. As Ricky Gervais’ second attempt at a feature film, and taking £5.9m in October alone, it enters the monthly box office at number two.

Dancing its way up the chart, 1980s musical classic remake FAME, released in September moved up to three from its previous number five spot, taking £5.3m.
