2018 Awards Season kicks off with Golden Globes and BAFTA nominee announcement

The 2018 Awards Season is officially underway, with the winners of the 75th Golden Globe Awards being revealed over the weekend, honouring some of the best names in film and TV, while the nominations for the 2018 BAFTAs have also been unveiled.

Golden Globes

Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was the biggest winner, claiming the most coveted prize of the night, best drama film.

The film picked up four awards overall, with McDonagh winning best screenplay, Sam Rockwell winning best supporting actor in a motion picture (drama) and Frances McDormand picking up best actress in a drama film.

Lady Bird followed close behind Three Billboards, picking up best musical or comedy film and best actress in a musical or comedy film going to lead Saoirse Ronan.

Guillermo Del Toro triumphed in the best director category, picking up the award for his latest effort The Shape of Water.

Other film winners included Gary Oldman (best actor for Darkest Hour), James Franco (best actor in a comedy or musical for The Disaster Artist), Allison Janney (best supporting actress in drama for I, Tonya) and Coco (best animated film).

BAFTAs

The nominations have been announced for the 71st British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), which will take place on Sunday 18 February.

The film with the most nominations is Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape Of Water with 12, while Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri both received nine nominations, including Best Film.

Of the films yet to be released in UK cinemas, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread and I, Tonya all received acting nominations.

Awards Season – how to get involved

Awards Season is the best time of year for brands to reach a more discerning ABC1 affluent audience, with 29% of ABC1 adults agreeing that they’re more likely to see a film at cinema if it’s nominated for Oscars or BAFTAs.

Cinema as a whole delivers an upmarket audience but during awards season the ABC1 profile leaps and 73% of awards season cinemagoers will be ABC1 adults.
