The winners of the 76th annual Golden Globes were announced at a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in California on 7 January 2019. Bohemian Rhapsody was the big winner on the night, taking home Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for lead star Rami Malek. This now places Malek in pole position for the Academy Awards.
Malek paid tribute to Queen in his acceptance speech, remarking "To you, Brian May, to you, Roger Taylor, for ensuring that authenticity remains in the world.”
Green Book also had a successful evening, taking home three awards including Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.
A Star is Born took home only one of five nominations, picking up Best Original Song for Shallow.
Arguably the biggest shock of the night was Glenn Close triumphing in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama category for her role in The Wife, fending off competition from favourite Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born).
Olivia Colman picked up Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role in The Favourite, triumphing over a star-studded line-up including Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Blunt.
Other winners include Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for Best Motion Picture-Animated, and Roma for Best Director-Motion Picture and Best Motion Picture- Foreign Language.
Universal Pictures were the most successful studio, picking up four wins in total.
