The 2020 Awards Season kicked into gear on Sunday with the 77th annual Golden Globes. Sam Mendes’ 1917 was the big winner on the night, taking home Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director for Mendes. This is seen as a huge boost in the film’s Oscar chances, with nominations announced next week.
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood also had a successful evening, taking home three awards including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt.
Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language was awarded to Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, putting the film in pole position for the Oscars.
The biggest shock of the night occurred in the Best Motion Picture – Animated category, where Missing Link triumphed over iconic franchises such as Toy Story 4 and Frozen II.
Joaquin picked up Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his lead role in Joker, fending off fierce competition from a stacked category including Adam Driver and Christian Bale.
Taron Egerton took home Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his role as Elton John in Rocketman, with the aforementioned singer taking home Best Original Song for ‘(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again’, also from Rocketman.
In the Best Actress categories, Renee Zellweger picked up the Drama prize for her role as Judy Garland in Judy, with Awkwafina being awarded in the Musical or Comedy category for The Farewell.
