The 2021 shortlist includes two female directors for the first time and the most diverse line-up of nominees ever.
David Fincher’s Mank leads the ways with 10 nominations. Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Sound of Metal, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father and Nomadland all received six nominations each. Promising Young Woman and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom have five nominations.
Two women have been nominated for best director - the first time more than one woman has been shortlisted for that prize while only five women ever nominated in the category in the awards' history. Chloe Zhao has been nominated for directing Nomadland and Emerald Fennell is recognised for Promising Young Woman.
Now in their 93rd year, the Oscars internationally recognise the greatest film achievements over the past year. The ceremony, which has been delayed due to the pandemic, will take place on 25 April.
