The 2023 awards season is well and truly underway, with nominations for both the BAFTAs and the Oscars having been announced recently.

The films leading the pack with the most nominations this year are:

  • Everything Everywhere All At Once: 10 BAFTA nominations, 11 Oscar nominations
  • The Banshees of Inisherin: 10 BAFTA Nominations, 9 Oscar nominations
  • All Quiet on the Western Front: 14 BAFTA nominations, 9 Oscar nominations

All three of these films have been nominated for both the BAFTA for Best Film and the Academy Award for Best Picture.

A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once has garnered all around praise since its release in May 2022. At the Golden Globes earlier this month, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won the awards for Best Actress - Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy and Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture, with Quan’s emotional acceptance speech tugging at the heartstrings of many.

They are both nominated for Leading Actress and Supporting Actor at this year’s BAFTAs and Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis are also nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, with Curtis nominated for the BAFTA for Supporting Actress too.

Searchlight Pictures’ The Banshees of Inisherin is the nominee with the highest critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, of 97%. As well as Best Film, it is also nominated for Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs. At the Golden Globes, it won the award for Best Picture - Musical/Comedy and Best Screen Play, and Colin Farrell picked up the Golden Globe for Best Actor - Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy.

Farrell is also up for the awards for Leading Actor at the BAFTAs and Best Actor at the Oscars, although he faces some tough competition against the likes of Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Austin Butler (Elvis), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living). His co-star Brendan Gleeson is nominated for the BAFTA for Supporting Actor and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Kerry Condon is nominated for the BAFTA for Supporting Actress and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

All Quiet on the Western Front is the only Netflix release and the only non-English speaking film to be nominated for Best Film and Best Picture at the BAFTAs and Oscars. Although it did not pick up any Golden Globe Awards this year, just missing out on Best Picture - Non-English Language to Argentina, 1985, it stands a very good chance to receive some awards at the BAFTAs and Oscars.

It is nominated for Best Film and Best International Film at this year’s BAFTAs, and Best Picture and Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, along with a host of nominations for music, production, screenplay, cinematography and more.

Elvis and Tár are the two other films nominated for the BAFTA for Best Film, and the full list of nominations for Academy Award for Best Picture are:

  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Avatar: The Way of Water
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Elvis
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once
  • The Fabelmans
  • Tár
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • Triangle of Sadness
  • Women Talking

Three of these films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars are still yet to hit UK cinemas:

  • The Fabelmans – 27 January
  • The Whale – 3 February
  • Women Talking – 17 February

Their nominations are sure to spark further interest from the public, and drive audiences to watch these three films on the big screen.

The EE BAFTA Film Awards will take place on Sunday 19 February, and the 95th Oscars will be held on Sunday 12 March. Make sure to tune in to see this year’s winners revealed!
