Last night, the 2023 EE British Academy Film Awards took place at The Royal Festival Hall in London.

The three big winners of the night were All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin and Elvis.

All Quiet on the Western Front won seven BAFTAs: Best Film; Director for Edward Berger; Film Not in the English Language; Adapted Screenplay; Cinematography; Original Score and Sound. Although initially released on Netflix for streaming only, the film’s success has brought it to selected UK cinemas for audiences to experience in full.

The Banshees of Inisherin won four BAFTAs: Outstanding British Film; Original Screenplay; Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan and Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon. Although the film achieved just over 500k industry admissions to date, The Banshees of Inisherin has received stellar reviews throughout, including a 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Elvis also won four BAFTAs: Leading Actor for Austin Butler; Casting; Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. The film achieved over 2.3m industry admissions across its theatrical release, and topped the UK box office on its opening weekend.

Other big winners included Cate Blanchett, who won the BAFTA for Leading Actress for her performance in Tár, making this her fourth BAFTA award.

In a big surprise for audiences, Everything Everywhere All At Once only received one BAFTA, for Editing, despite having ten nominations at the awards.

Avatar: The Way of Water won the BAFTA for Special Visual Effects, and Babylon won the award for Production Design.

Charlotte Wells won Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Aftersun. It is now back on the film schedule at selected UK cinemas, as is The Banshees of Inisherin and Tár.

Attention now turns to the 2023 Oscars, which will be held on Sunday 12 March.
