2013 has been another great year for cinema with huge hits throughout, including Despicable Me 2 (£47.3m), Les Misérables (£40.7m), Iron Man 3 (£37m) and Monsters University (£30.6m), with big hitters such as Anchorman 2 and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug still to come.

As we draw closer to the end of 2013, we can look forward to a boat-load of movie entertainment in store in Q1 2014.

Non-stop Action:

Q1 2014 is full of all-out, non-stop action movies, perfect for targeting a flush and flash young male audience in UK cinemas.

This audience segment are heavy mobile and internet users, visiting the cinema on average 7.3 times a year, accounting for nearly a quarter of all UK Box Office admissions.

These guys are early adopters, so they’re first in the queue when a new film comes out and the first to tell their friends about it, because being the first to know carries extra kudos. The same applies to the brands they choose, making cinema a perfect space for brands to connect with this supercharged and trend setting audience.

Here are just some of the movies in Q1 2014 that will appeal to these “die-hard cine-fans.”

“Dead or alive, you are coming with me”, immortal words first spoken by Peter Weller back in 1987, as a modern Frankenstein’s monster for urban pacification. The reboot of Robocop, starring Joel Kinnaman as the “toughest cop on the beat” is slated for release on February 7.

Liam Neeson returns to the big screen in a fast paced and twisted thriller, Non-Stop. Neeson plays an air marshal aboard an international flight, who must stop digital hijackers getting their way. The only problem: all the evidence points to Neeson being the hijacker. Non-Stop releases February 28.

Swords and Sandals fans with a thirst for blood can rejoice, as 300: Rise of an Empire sails into UK cinemas March 7. After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by Admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.

Thor and Iron Man cleaned up at the UK box office in 2013, now, The First Avenger returns in the hotly anticipated Captain America: The Winter Soldier March 26. Two years after the events of The Avengers, Steve Rogers resides peacefully in Washington, D.C., struggling to adapt to contemporary society. However, after a S.H.I.E.L.D. compatriot is assailed, Steve becomes entangled in a mystery that may endanger the globe. Together with Natasha Romanoff, Captain America attempts to uncover the growing machination while fending off hired hit men. When the entire scheme is discovered, Captain America and the Black Widow must recruit the aid of the Falcon and soon encounter an unanticipated and powerful adversary — The Winter Soldier.

All you need is love:

There’s more than non-stop action in Q1 2014, a selection of beautiful and engrossing stories of love are scattered among the debris left behind by the actioners in the first quarter that allow brands to reach a smart, savvy female centric audience.

A large proportion of this audience owns a smart phone (75%) and regularly shares their cinema experiences via social networks (75% versus 50% non-cinemagoers). On average, they attend the cinema in groups of three, making it a much more sociable event and they will extend the experience going for a meal or drink afterwards, meaning they are primed for messaging from restaurants and bar chains using DCM Bespoke Local messaging. They are just as likely to browse online after the movie, so offers and discounts delivered via DCM’s Cinime app will also resonate well with this audience.

They’re into cinema just as much as their male counterparts – and while rom-coms do rank high in terms of preference – they’re just as up for heart-stopping horror as heart-break, and big budget blockbusters as break-ups!

Below are a few of the upcoming movies that will rate high on the preferences of these “cine-socialites.”

A modern love story with a difference, Her, chronicles the story of a lonely writer (Joaquin Phoenix), as he develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system (Scarlett Johansson) that's designed to meet his every need. Her will release in UK cinemas February 14.
