A Look Ahead to Q1 2014 Pt. 2 - Thoughtful Dramas and Family Friendly Fare

Last week, we took a peek at some of the biggest action and romance movies due out in Q1 2014, now Thoughtful Dramas and Family Friendly Fare are in the spotlight.

First up, Thoughtful Dramas, perfect for targeting a more mature and therefore settled audience, in the 45+ plus age range. Typically, they’re smart, tech-savvy, comfortably-off and free to live-it-up in any way they choose. These are no pipe and slipper senior citizens. They’re active, engaged and raring to go, and you’ll find them at the cinema.

Inside Llewyn

Set for release 24 January, Inside Llewyn Davis,portrays a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles -- some of them of his own making. Inside Llewyn Davis has already garnered Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and Best Original Song - Motion Picture. After winning the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, expect it to also perform well in the upcoming Academy Award nominations.

Dallas

Dallas Buyers Club, releasing 7 February, is another chapter in the transition of Matthew McConaughey from a rom-com player to a serious actor, beginning first with the acclaimed Killer Joe and continuing with the complex 2013 drama, Mud. In 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof (McConaughey), works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is himself diagnosed with the disease, creating the Dallas Buyers Club.

Monuments

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men (releasing 21 February) focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.

Book Thief

Continuing the WWII theme, The Book Thief releases 26 February. The movie tells the story of a spirited and courageous young girl who transforms the lives of everyone around her when she is sent to live with a foster family in World War II Germany.

Family Friendly Fare

Families make up over 70m of the UK's cinema admissions each year and provide a valuable opportunity for advertisers to reach both parents and children at the same time. A trip to a stately home or walk in the park will never be met with the same sense of wide eyed excitement as the latest blockbuster. On average, they attend in groups of four and, like the “cine-socialites”, they are very likely to go for a meal or visit a retail location after the movie.

Here are some of the movies in Q1 that will appeal to the “cine-families.”

Mr Peabody

Mr. Peabody is a business titan, inventor, scientist, gourmand, two-time Olympic medalist and genius...who also happens to be a dog. Using his most ingenious invention, the WABAC machine, Mr. Peabody and his adopted boy Sherman hurtle back in time to experience world-changing events first-hand and interact with some of the greatest characters of all time. But when Sherman breaks the rules of time travel, our two heroes find themselves in a race to repair history and save the future, while Mr. Peabody may face his biggest challenge yet - being a parent. Mr. Peabody and Sherman releases 7 February.

LEGO Movie

Everybody loves LEGO (except when you step on them), so The LEGO Movie, releasing 14 February will definitely have a place in a lot of people’s hearts. We follow an ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary “Master Builder”, as he is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil LEGO tyrant from gluing the universe together.

The Muppets Most Wanted

The Muppets Most Wanted is the next instalment in the wildly successful franchise form the mind of Jim Henson, releasing 28 March. While on a grand world tour, the Muppets find themselves wrapped into a European jewel-heist caper headed by a Kermit lookalike and his dastardly sidekick.

Q1 2014 is packed with movies that will appeal to every kind of cinemagoer, giving brands a great opportunity to engage with an active and affluent audience through the most emotionally impactful medium, cinema.
