Tim Burton’s version of Lewis Carroll’s captivating tale had a record-breaking weekend, grossing £10.6m in its first three days. It smashed all box office predictions and took £140m worldwide, making it the biggest opening so far this year.
It is also the best debut performance of all time for a 3D movie – James Cameron’s Avatar took only £8.5m during its opening weekend - as well as the top March opening of all time, beating Mr Bean’s 2007 movie by 68%.
Alice in Wonderland is also Burton’s most successful film opening, beating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which made £8.0m in its first weekend before going on to gross £37.8m in the UK.
