It’s that time of year again, and this season’s meeting began with the first London CEA meeting, for some time. We all met up at the fabulous Olympic Barnes, in glorious ATMOS sound.
The first CEA meeting of the Autumn season also had a new feel, as the format has been refreshed somewhat - now the open meeting is conducted in the afternoon, which enables a longer more energetic closed meeting in the morning (or so I heard) and makes it far more practical for all of us who sit alongside our Exhibitor partners. There were some great updates, some of which are summarised below:
Into Film - 4 to 21 Nov 2014
Into Film (formerly known as Film Nation UK) is a new organisation established by leading film education charities, First Light and FILMCLUB, to inspire young people aged 5-19 across the UK to learn through and about film. Into Film puts film at the heart of children and young people's learning and cultural experience. Working with the education sector and film industry they deliver an ambitious and accessible 'See, think, make. Imagine' programme that seeks to make a step change in film learning for 5-19 year olds, encouraging and enabling watching, making and critical understanding on a scale never before seen in this country.
Into Film is supported by many partners from the film industry, teaching and education and third sector organisations including LOVEFiLM, NUT (National Union of Teachers), NSP (National Schools Partnership), National Literacy Trust, Industry Trust, Filmbank and BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts).

Autism Awareness Week - Thursday 2 April 2015
In 2014 there were an amazing 633 screenings, with 247 actually taking place on World Autism Awareness Day (2 April 2014). Autism screenings are a great way grow your audience, increase admissions and enable your cinema to reach out to your local communities and increase awareness of your activities in local media.
The 2015 Autism Awareness week falls during the Easter Holidays, which should give it a further boost. Please contact Grainne Peat (grainne.peat@cinemauk.org.uk) for more info.
CEA Digital Conference - 27 Nov @ Cineworld at the O2, Greenwich, East London
The ‘Cinema of the Future: innovation driving the audience experience’ conference is open to colleagues from across the industry.
As well as providing networking opportunities, the conference will consider those benefits experienced by a now fully digital sector as well as changes that lie ahead. Key sessions on the day will consider; The opportunities presented by digital cinema operation; New cinema business models; Emerging technologies; The next round of digitisation - when this will be, what it might look like and how it might be funded.
Around 300 delegates are expected to attend from: exhibition, distribution, cinema suppliers, local authority, digital integrators, technology companies, architects/designers, property developers, financial and retail sectors. The event will be sponsored by a select number of high profile companies.
The first session, entitled ‘Managing the Digital Present’ [10.30-11.45] includes DCMs CEO Simon Rees. It will look at the additional revenue opportunities presented by digital technology, in particular the ability to show a broader range of films, better matched to available audience, and the way digitisation has brought about a step change in the attractiveness of the big screen advertisers.

Event Cinema Association Networking Conference 2014 - Thursday 16 October 2014
There was also a reminder from Melissa Cogavin (MD of the ECA) about the ECA event, to be held at our very own Genesis, Whitechapel. Come and have a drink on DCM from 17.30.
So another jammed packed day, however I was lucky enough to be able to stay on and indulge in a little Magic in the Moonlight, by way of Woody Allen’s new feature. I really enjoyed it, although I am a little bias, as I am a massive fan of his work.
Rebecca and I will see the rest of you on our travels in the coming weeks:
Northern and Midlands - 28 October - Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle
Scottish - 29 October - West Coast Cinema, Greenock
Devon, Cornwall and West of England branch - 5 November - Central Cinema, Barnstaple
Looking forward to it.
Take care,
Steve
