Battle: Los Angeles Commands UK No. 1

Battle: Los Angeles

Battle: Los Angeles has won the UK box office battle debuting in first place over the weekend.

The Aaron Eckhart-led sci-fi blockbuster opened with £1.8m to narrowly edge past Johnny Depp's Rango and secure the chart top spot. The action thriller is the second best opening for star Aaron Eckhart, trailing only The Dark Knight.

With Unknown and The Adjustment Bureau still pulling in the punters in their second weekends, thriller Unknown holds its position at number three, while The Adjustment Bureau falls to number four. Meanwhile the new release Hall Pass, the latest comedy from the Farrelly brothers, completes the top five.

Across the pond, Aaron Eckhart and his team of alien-killing marines also battled their way to the US top spot. Battle: Los Angeles grossed an impressive $36m (estimated). This is the second highest opening gross of 2011 to date, behind last weeks Rango opening ($38.1m). Exit polls indicated its audience was 68% male and 55% aged over 25.
