"Being a big fan of musicals, (and of Tim Minchin’s magical score) this was the number one film on my must-see list for this LFF – and boy did it not disappoint! It’s hard to replicate the heart of the original movie or the mammoth success of the West End Musical, but this adaptation of said musical succeeds in being perhaps one of the best remakes in recent years. Stars Stephen Graham (Mr Wormwood), Emma Thompson (Miss Trunchbull) and Lashana Lynch (Miss Honey) are fantastic, but this film belongs to the amazing child cast. Newcomer Alisha Weir is perfectly cast in a more modern, confident Matilda (who young girls are sure to fall in love with) whilst the young male cast were perhaps the most adorable kids ever seen on the big screen. Solid British films like this never fail to capture audiences imaginations and I look forward to watching this again as audiences once again fall in love with Roald Dahl’s magical tale."

"I loved it! You could tell that there was so much time and effort put into making something special. Matilda is already an iconic British book and movie but this is something which I think will capture everyone. Stephen Graham was amazing and Emma Thompson was just incredible. I also, from watching No Time to Die, did not know Lashana Lynch had such an amazing voice!"

"The festival’s standout has to be it’s opening Gala with Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical, a film so British it has Emma Thompson in a set of crooked dentures. Nothing could be more fitting to kick off the London Film Festival, and I can’t wait for the public to get their hands on it and experience the sheer joy this film radiates."
