The Weekend Round-up

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron has been in cinemas just two weekends and it is already the third biggest film of the year. From Friday to Sunday it added a further £8.6m for a huge cume of £32.3m. It’s now the third highest grossing Marvel movie, behind Iron Man 3 and Avengers Assemble and it’s certain to overtake Iron Man 3 later this week.

Far From the Madding Crowd was the highest new entry, opening with an impressive £1.5m. Compare that to Suite Francaise, which opened with £503k in March, and it’s a very strong result.

Low budget horror, Unfriended kicked off with £1.3m in third. Some surprisingly strong reviews in the press and poor weather will have contributed to this impressive performance.

Fast & Furious 7 fell just 31% from Friday to Sunday to £1.1m, which is a fantastic result in the face of strong competition from Age Of Ultron. FF7 has now banked £36.5m and is the biggest film of 2015 to date.

Home completed the top five, actually increasing on last weekend by 8%, delivering £733k over the weekend. It has now grossed £21.8m

Outside of the top five, Two By Two always looked like a minor family release and so it proved, as it opened with £567k over the weekend.

On what was yet another strong weekend, the box office was down 31% from last weekend but more importantly, up 101% from the same weekend last year when the biggest films were The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Other Woman, Pompeii and Tarzan.

Next Weekend

Before the Pitch Perfect 2 / Mad Max: Fury Road double header on 15 May, next weekend is relatively low key, with five smaller releases.

Spooks: The Greater Good is the big screen debut for the hit BAFTA winning BBC drama. At its peak it had 9.6m viewers on the BBC.

The Age Of Adaline stars Blake Lively as a woman who never ages, and has been a moderate success in the US (see below).

A Royal Night Out is set on V.E. day as the future Queen Elizabeth is allowed one night out on the town.

Top Five is a romantic comedy written by, directed by and starring Chris Rock.  It’s had great reviews in the US and currently has a score of 81 on Metacritic.

Big Game stars Samuel L. Jackson as the US president whose plane is shot down and relies on the help of a teenager to survive.

The Buzz

Pitch Perfect 2 is in cinemas on 15 May and with the embargo lifted, the first reviews are starting to be released. Screen Daily called it ‘pleasantly entertaining’ and ‘cheerfully undemanding’. Digital Spy awarded the film three stars, finishing their review with ‘the mix of comedy and music is infectiously upbeat, with a cheeky up-yours to political correctness.’ DCM’s Ana Takis saw the film on Friday and said it was ‘good, but not as good as the first’. Despite this, expect it to outperform the first film.

Across The Pond

Avengers: Age of Ultron opened with the second biggest debut of all time. It’s total of $191.3m is only behind Avengers Assemble’s mark of $207.4m. The rest of the films were far behind, with Furious 7 falling 63% in second to $6.6m and to date has grossed $331.1m. The Age of Adaline was in third, falling 53% to $6.2m and a cume of $23.4m. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 fell to fourth, plummeting 60% to $5.9m and to date it has banked $51.5m. Home completed the top five, adding $3.5m for a new total of $158.3m.
