The Weekend Round-up

Alien: Covenant entered the cinema marketplace on Friday and burst through all the other entries, to proudly sit atop of the box office.

It opened with £5.2m, which included £348k from previews. While that’s an impressive figure, it’s some way short of Prometheus’ £6.2m opening weekend in 2012. Covenant took something of a hit on Sunday, probably due to the sunny weather, so hopefully it can have a strong midweek.

After topping the box office for two weekends, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 fell to second but a drop of 46% is a solid hold for a film of this kind. Adding £3.3m takes its total to £33m and it has now overtaken the first film’s final total of £28.5m. It’s now Marvel’s fifth biggest film ever in the UK and it has also overtaken La La Land’s final total of £30.4m to become the second biggest film of 2017.

The Boss Baby had a great hold in third, falling just 13% to £581k. It’s has now grossed an impressive £26.3m and with May half term to come, it has a good chance of overhauling The LEGO Batman Movie (£27.2m).

Fast & Furious 8 fell to fourth, adding £503k, which takes it to £29m. If it holds up well over the coming weeks, it could become the fourth release of 2017 to cross the £30m mark.

A Dog’s Purpose rounded out the top five, falling just 22% to £490k. That hold suggests that it’s playing strongly with the family audience, which bodes well for the upcoming May half term. To date it has grossed £2m.

Outside of the top five, one time awards hopeful, Miss Sloane, opened in eighth with £190k.

Overall the box office was up 3% from last weekend and up 22% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were Captain America: Civil War, The Angry Birds Movie, The Jungle Book and Bad Neighbours 2.

Next Weekend

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is Guy Ritchie’s take on the classic legend. Robbed of his birthright, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy - whether he likes it or not.

Snatched stars Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn, in her first big screen role since 2002. When her boyfriend dumps her before their exotic vacation, a young woman (Schumer) persuades her ultra-cautious mother (Hawn) to travel with her to paradise, with unexpected results.

Colossal is a quirky sci-fi comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. Hathaway stars as Gloria, an out-of-work party girl forced to leave her life in NY and move back home. When reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, she gradually comes to the realisation that she is somehow connected to this phenomenon.

The Buzz

mother! is the latest film from Black Swan and The Wrestler director, Darren Aronofsky. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer and Domhnall Gleeson and is being described as about “a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.” That’s an intriguing set-up, but the first poster has now been released and is even more intriguing. It’s one of the most exciting films of 2017.
