Box Office Round-up
IF takes the top spot this weekend at the UK box office with £1.5m and has the lowest drop from the top 10 list with just a fall of -4%. John Krasinski’s whimsical comedy has a total to date of £9.6m and will shortly become the tenth 2024 release to cross the £10m mark. Krasinski’s previous films grossed £11.7m (A Quiet Place Part II) and £12.2m (A Quiet Place) so IF is looking likely to reach similar figures.
The Garfield Movie jumps to second place with £1.3m, dropping just 8% from its opening weekend and 36% WoW. The latest new adaptation has a running total of £6.2m, soon to overtake the lifetime of 2006’s Garfield 2 (£6.5m). Extending Chris Pratt’s success as a voice actor, his animated films are grossing over £120m to date, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie (£54.9 million), the two LEGO Movies (£53.2 million), and Onward (£7.6 million)
Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes remains in third with £1m, dropping 33% in its fourth weekend on release. This new instalment in the iconic franchise has made £13.2m to date, making it the seventh-highest grossing 2024 release so far, ahead of Back To Black (£12.1m) and just behind Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (£14.6m).
In fourth place is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga with £962k, a 51% drop from its opening last weekend. George Miller’s prequel has grossed £4.5m to date and has the third-highest IMAX 2D gross among 2024 releases so far with £838k, above Civil War (£764k) and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (£571k).
The Fall Guy is a non-mover in fifth, with £522k in its fifth weekend, down just 31%. David Leitch’s action-drama has crossed the £11m milestone, overtaking the lifetime of his previous release Bullet Train (£10.9m).
The 20th Anniversary re-release of Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban opens at no.6 this weekend with £393k. This film originally opened in 2004 with £23.8m and went on to gross £46.2m. Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle is the highest new opener this weekend at no.7 with £269k. Sony’s latest anime release achieved a full 5 stars in the PostTrak poll, along with a 93% Total Positive rating. Another new opener is at no.8, with Sting grossing £230k (including previews). Kiah Roache-Turner’s horror gained 3 stars in the PostTrak exit survey and a 77% Total Positive rating. Closing the chart are The Strangers: Chapter 1 at ninth place with £161k, and Challengers at the tenth spot with £119k.
The overall box office is down 16% from last weekend, and down 54% versus the equivalent weekend in 2023 when Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse opened at No.1 with £8.3m, and The Little Mermaid was at No.2 with £4.2m.

The Buzz
Twisters is forecasted to be a whirlwind of success, building on the beloved legacy of the original Twister (1966), with a strong cast including Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) and Glenn Powell (Anyone But You). Set to deliver 1.2m industry admissions and bring in a mix of audiences who love action, this film is an ideal opportunity for brands targeting either 16-24 adults/16-34 men and off the back of Wimbledon concluding on 14 July. Twisters will also be an efficient way to extend reach skewing toward young viewers starting 19 July.
Across The Pond
Across the weekend in the US, The Garfield Movie continues its run adding $14m, taking the top spot. IF follows behind in second with $10.8m, taking its total to $57.6m. Furiosa similarly added $10.8m for a new total of $64.7m taking the third spot, while Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes remains in fourth and adds $8.8m. The Fall Guy takes the 5th spot, taking a hit by -40% WoW grossing another $4.2m taking its total to $77.6m.
