Box Office Round-up
It was the first consistently sunny and warm weekend of the year and the box office felt the heat with all films suffering significant drops from last weekend, some over 70%. The big new entry was Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes which opened in the top spot with £3.8m, which includes £650k from previews on Thursday. The last film in the long-running sci-fi series, War For The Planet Of The Apes, opened with a Friday to Sunday total of £5.2m in 2017 and finished with £20.8m. Hopefully Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes can bounce back over the next few weeks, including half-term on week commencing 24 May.
Last weekend’s top film, The Fall Guy fell to second adding £949k, which is down 74% from last weekend. That’s clearly a pretty hefty drop and can be attributed to the weather across the weekend. After two weekends in cinemas it’s up to £6.7m and while it still has some way to go to reach the final totals of The Lost City (£10.7m) and Bullet Train (£11m). With the sunny weather hopefully gone for a while, The Fall Guy can still get up towards those two films.
Challengers fell to third, adding £333k across the weekend, a drop of 66% from last weekend (last weekend it fell 36% for comparison). That takes its total after three weekends in cinemas to £4.7m, which is still a healthy total. The last tennis film in cinemas was Battle Of The Sexes, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell in 2017, which finished its run with £1.5m so Challengers is beating that one in straight sets.
Back To Black came in fourth adding £211k, a drop of 73% from last weekend. That takes its total to £11.3m and it should still have the legs to finish with a total superior to Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (£11.6m).
Rounding out the top five is Tarot which added £141k for a new total of £1.2m.
Outside of the top five, Josh O’Connor’s second film in the top 10, after Challengers, La Chimera opened in eighth with £15 shy of £100k.

The Buzz
Despicable Me 4 is set to be the biggest film of the summer and one of the biggest films of 2024. In this sixth film in the Despicable Me universe Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes welcome a new member to the family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara), and the family is forced to go on the run. All four Despicable Me sequels / spin-offs have delivered in the region of 5m DCM admissions, so there’s every reason to expect this one to do the same. Using Minions: The Rise Of Gru as a comparative, we have forecast Despicable Me 4 to deliver a huge 18 16-34 adult TVRs across the industry. It’s in cinemas on 12 July.
