The Weekend Round-up

After the record-breaking heights of last weekend, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice came back to earth with a bump on its second weekend, falling 68% to £4.7m. Despite that chunky drop, after ten days in cinemas it has banked an impressive £27.8m.

This week’s highest new entry, is the feel good British treat, Eddie The Eagle. After opening on Easter Monday, the film had four days of previews totalling £1.3m, bringing its total to a healthy £2.8m. Distributor Lionsgate will be hoping that strong word of mouth can see the title sustain strongly over the coming weeks.

Zootropolis had a strong second weekend, falling a slim 24% (once previews are removed) to £2.7m. After a strong first week of the Easter holidays, the terrific animation is up to £12.6m.

Kung Fu Panda 3 dropped to fourth but added another £762k for a cume of £11.1m. It looks like Kung Fu Panda 2’s final total of £17m is going to be out of reach.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 completed the top five and held up rather well, adding £615k. That brings its total to £2.5m.

Outside of the top five, London Has Fallen added £307k and crossed the £10m mark in the process. That’s a terrific result and a big improvement on Olympus Has Fallen’s £6.2m.

Overall the box office was down 45% from last weekend and down 38% from the same weekend last year when the top four films were Fast & Furious 7, Cinderella, Home and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water.

Next Weekend

The Huntsman Winter’s War is in cinemas from today. This prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman sees Chris Hemworth return as the Huntsman. Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt star as two evil sisters who attempt to conquer the land; while the Huntsman and his forbidden lover, Sara (Jessica Chastain) set out to stop them. Snow White And The Huntsman grossed £15.8m in 2012.

Midnight Special is out on Friday and is the latest from Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter), one of the leading lights of American independent cinema. Michael Shannon stars as a father who goes on the run with his son when he learns he possesses special powers. DCM’s Katie Saunders and Celia Small saw it as part of Odeon Screen Unseen and they both said it was terrific.

Hardcore Henry is also out on Friday and is a first-person action film told through the eyes of Henry, who's resurrected from death with no memory. He must discover his identity and save his wife from a warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers.

The Buzz

After the release of Cinderella last year, The Jungle Book is the latest classic Disney animation to get a live-action makeover. Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Elf) directs an all-star cast, including Bill Murray as Baloo and Idris Elba as Shere Khan and the first reviews are now out and they’re all universally positive. Robbie Collin in The Telegraph said ‘Favreau’s film is a sincere and full-hearted adaptation that returns to Kipling for fresh inspiration’, while Screen International said ‘The level of detail on display is likely to evoke the same jaw-dropping reaction as James Cameron’s Avatar.’ It’s out in the UK on 15 April and is playing at the special Ad Week DCM Tuesdays on 19 April.
