Box Office Round-up

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made it four weekends in the top spot, adding £1.8m, a drop of 26% from last weekend. That’s a much better hold than last weekend, when it fell 42%. After four weekends in cinemas, Tim Burton’s blockbuster sequel is up to a terrific £21m, and it’s now the eighth biggest film released so far this year. It's also the fourth biggest film for director Tim Burton, behind only Dumbo (£25.1m), Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (£37.8m) and Alice In Wonderland (£42.6m).

Speak No Evil posted a strong hold in second, falling just 21% to £642k, which takes its total to £4m. It’s horror masters Blumhouse’s fourth release of 2024 and is already their biggest film of the year, having overtaken March’s Imaginary (£2m). It looks set to be the second-biggest non-franchise horror of 2024, behind only Longlegs.

Saoirse Ronan drama The Outrun opened in third with £450k, which includes £52k from previews. Ronan’s last film in cinemas was Foe, which she starred in alongside Paul Mescal. That opened with £93k in October 2023, so The Outrun has made a much better start. She starred in another coastal based drama in 2018, in On Chesil Beach, which finished its run with £1m, which should be easily achievable for The Outrun.

South Asian release Devara Part 1 opened in fourth with £441k, which includes £226k from Thursday previews. That’s the fourth biggest opening weekend for a South Asian release this year, behind Kalki 2898 AD, The Greatest Of All Time, and Fighter.

MUBI’s body-horror The Substance rounded out the top five and posted a terrific hold, falling just 19% to £421k. That takes its total after two weekends in cinemas to £1.5m, and it looks nailed on to become the distributor's second biggest film of all-time, a title that is currently held by Aftersun with £1.9m. Priscilla in first place with £3.3m might be out of reach.

Outside of the top five, a few new films landed in the lower end of the top 10. Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis opened in seventh with £358k, the 20th anniversary re-release of Shaun Of The Dead opened in ninth with £314k, and horror title Never Let Go opened in 10th with £307k (which includes £50k from previews).

In this week’s Despicable Me watch, Despicable Me 4 has crossed the £47m mark, which every Despicable Me sequel and Minions spin-off has reached. No film in the series has reached £48m yet, can DM 4 be the first?

Next Weekend

Joker: Folie A Deux is a sequel to one of the biggest comic book films of all-time, and a film that won two Oscars, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix returns as Arthur Fleck who is institutionalized at Arkham, awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him. Lady Gaga co-stars.

A Different Man is a drama starring Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson. After undergoing facial-reconstructive surgery, Edward (Stan) becomes fixated on an actor in a stage production based on his former life.

Buffalo Kids is an animation about two Irish orphans who journey by train across America, encountering villains and heroes. They make an extraordinary friend and search for a new home, facing adventures and dangers along the way. It previews on Saturday and Sunday, before opening everywhere on 13 October.

The Buzz

Sinners is a dark thriller starring Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who try to leave their life behind and return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. It’s an original story written and directed by Ryan Coogler, who is forging one of the great modern actor-director partnerships with B. Jordan, after they worked together on Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther. The first trailer is striking and intense and this looks like one of the stand-out films in Q1, particularly for 16-34 men. Sinners opens in the UK cinemas on 7 March.

Across The Pond

The Wild Robot opened in the top spot with $35m, which bodes well for its release in the UK & Ireland on 18 October. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice fell to second but added $16m for a new total of $250.1m. Transformers One took a hefty tumble in third, adding $9.3m, a drop of 62% from last weekend, which takes its total to $39.2m. Devara Part 1 opened in fourth with $5.6m, while Speak No Evil rounded out the top 5, adding $4.3m for a new total of $28.1m.
