The Weekend Round-up

Captain America: Civil War launched with a blockbusting £14.5m from Friday to Sunday. In terms of three day openings, that’s just behind Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (£14.6m).

Not to be outdone, The Jungle Book also had a great weekend, falling just 29% from Friday to Sunday to £5.8m, bringing its total to £30.2m. It’s now nailed on to hit £40m, which would make it the biggest film of 2016 to date, although Civil War may end up having something to say about that.

Eye In The Sky fell to third, but another £529k over the weekend brings its total to £3.7m.

Continuing a great weekend for Disney, Zootropolis came in fourth, adding £516k for a new total of £22.2m.

Bastille Day completed the top five, adding £335k from Friday to Sunday for a new cume of £1.5m.

Outside of the top five, Jake Gyllenhaal drama, Demolition, opened in seventh with £265k (including £27k from previews), for a four total of £265k. Curzon title, Son Of Saul opened in eighth with £179k from Friday to Sunday (including £48k from previews) and it should hold up well over the coming weeks. Finally, animation, Ratchet And Clank suffered against stronger family titles, bringing in £148k over the weekend.

Overall the box office was up 76% from last weekend and up 50% from the same weekend last year when the top four films were The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Far From The Madding Crowd, Unfriended and Fast & Furious 7.

Next Weekend

Bad Neighbours 2 is the sequel to one of the break-out comedy hits of the last few years. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne led a great cast in a comedy that was not only very funny, but had characters you cared about too. It ended up grossing £16m in the UK, and delivering over 1.7m DCM admissions.

Florence Foster Jenkins stars Meryl Streep as the infamous New York socialite who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice. It’s a warm, funny and moving film that should play very well with an older audience.

Robinson Crusoe is an animation about a group of animal friends who end up stranded on a desert island with the title character.

The Buzz

Mother’s Day is the latest romantic comedy from 82 year-old Garry Marshall, the man responsible for Beaches, Pretty Woman and Valentine’s Day. Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts lead an ensemble cast about three generations of the same family coming together in the week leading up to Mother’s day. It’s out in the UK on 10 June.

Across The Pond

The Jungle Book held on to the top spot for the third weekend in a row, adding $43.7m, bringing its total to a huge $253.4m. The Huntsman: Winter's War held on to second place but had a steep drop to $9.6m, for a new total of $34.2m. Keanu was the highest new entry, kicking off its run with $9.5m. Finishing in fourth, Mother's Day managed just $8.3m and Barbershop: The Next Cut completed the top five, adding £6.1m, bringing its total to $44.7m.
