Box Office Round-up

Despite the wall-to-wall sunshine over the weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine opened with the biggest opening weekend of the year to date, and the biggest opening weekend for a 15-cert and above film of all time. It kicked off its run with £17.3m, £12.6m of which is from Friday to Sunday. That’s comfortably the biggest opening for a Deadpool film, with the first Deadpool opening with a Friday to Sunday total of £10m, while Deadpool 2 opened with £7.7m. Both films finished over £30m, with the first film the current series leader with £38.1m, but it looks pretty certain that Deadpool & Wolverine is heading to a total over £40m, and £50m isn’t out of the question either. Comscore’s PostTrak exit polling scored the film a full five stars, so it’s proving a big hit with audiences.

Despicable Me 4 fell to second, adding £3.1m, which is down 37% from last weekend, which is a pretty good hold considering the sunny weather. After 17 days in cinemas, the Illumination blockbuster is up to £25.3m and is now the third highest grossing film of the year, behind only Dune: Part II and Inside Out 2. Every single Despicable Me sequel and Minions spin-off to date has grossed between £47m and £48m at the UK & Ireland box office, so that has to be the target for Despicable Me 4. Film Monitor data suggests that 36% of the audience are 16-34 so far, which means that Despicable Me 4 has delivered approximately 8 16-34 adult TVRs across the industry.

Twisters fell to third and took a bit of a hit from Deadpool & Wolverine, falling 52% to £1.5m. After 10 days in cinemas the blustery blockbuster is up to £7.9m, and if the sunny weather abates for a while, it should still have a bit more to come.

Inside Out 2 in fourth crossed the £50m mark on Sunday, making it only the sixth animated film in history to cross that milestone. The Pixar blockbuster added £1.5m on its sixth weekend, a drop of just 28% from last weekend. Only Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, and Incredibles 2 have been bigger from Pixar. Incredibles 2 at £56.2m might be assailable too. Film Monitor data suggests that 38% of the audience are 16-34 so far and 25% 16-34 women, which means that Inside Out 2 has delivered approximately 16 16-34 adult TVRs across the industry, and 22 16-34 women TVRs.

The year’s big horror breakout continues to surprise. Longlegs added £724k, a drop of 45% from last weekend. After three weekends in cinemas it’s up to £5.7m and it is now by far distributor Black Bear’s biggest film ever, overtaking Ferrari, which finished with £4.2m.

Outside of the top five, Raayan is the latest South Asian release to crack the top 10, landing in seventh with £150k. I Saw The TV Glow opened in ninth with £59k.

The Buzz

Joker: Folie à Deux is the feverishly anticipated sequel to the 2019 sensation. Joaquin Phoenix returns as failed comedian Arthur Fleck who meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while in Arkham State Hospital. Upon release, the pair embark on a doomed romantic misadventure. The first film was nominated for 11 Oscars, with Phoenix winning Best Actor and the film also premiered at the Venice Film Festival, going on to win the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion. It was announced last week that this sequel is premiering in competition at Venice in early-September and festival chief, Alberto Barrera said of the film "it’s a continuation of the story but the film is completely different from the first film. If you’re expecting the same in terms of violence or other things, you’ll be surprised. When I saw the film in L.A. at the beginning of February there were four or five of us in the screening room, including writer Scott Silver, and we were astonished, our mouths were open at the end of the screening. It is a darker film.’ He went on to call the film ‘one of the most daring, brave and creative films in recent American cinema." Joker: Folie à Deux is forecast to deliver a whopping 19 16-34 men TVRs and is in cinemas from 4 October.
