The Weekend Round-up
After three weeks in the top spot, Deadpool 2 finally knocked Avengers: Infinity War from the top spot. The irreverent superhero sequel kicked off its run with £13m, which includes £5.3m in previews after opening on Tuesday. While that couldn’t top the £13.7m (including £3.8m from two days of previews) the first Deadpool opened with in 2016, that was a February release and didn’t have to compete with six days of solid sunshine, the royal wedding and the FA Cup final. With May half term week next week, it still has a chance of getting to £30m, which wouldn’t be too far short of the £38.1m the first film topped out on.
Avengers: Infinity War fell to second adding £2m, which takes its total to £64.1m. It’s now the 14th biggest film in UK history and the next film it will overtake is Jurassic World, in 13th with £64.4m.
Sherlock Gnomes fell to second and took a bit of a tumble, falling 56% to £710k. That takes its total to £3.5m and it looks like it will fall well short of Gnomeo And Juliet’s final total of £16m. It’s half-term next week, which should be a strong time for Sherlock Gnomes, weather permitting.
I Feel Pretty also fell 56% in fourth to £408k. That takes its total to £3.9m and it is now comfortably Amy Schumer’s biggest hit in the UK, overtaking Trainwreck’s final total of £3.2m. It is incidentally, Schumer’s first starring role that’s a 12A certificate, with her others being 15 certificate.
After a quiet opening last weekend, Melissa McCarthy vehicle Life Of The Party fell 58% in fifth to £227k. That takes its total to £1.1m and it still requires another £629k to overtake The Boss and become McCarthy and director Ben Falcone’s biggest film together.
Outside of the top five, the Saoirse Ronan starring On Chesil Beach opened in 11th with £67k, which includes £10k from previews. The Ian McEwan adaptation only opened at 31 locations and goes nationwide this coming Friday.
Overall, the box office was up 44% from last weekend and up 89% from the same weekend last year, when the top films wereKing: Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, Alien: Covenant, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Snatched.
Next Weekend

Show Dogs is a family comedy about Max, a macho, solitary Rottweiler police dog who is ordered to go undercover as a primped show dog in a prestigious dog show, along with his human partner, to avert a disaster from happening.
The Buzz
Book Club is a comedy with some legendary actors, including Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen. Four lifelong friends have their lives forever changed after reading 50 Shades of Grey in their monthly book club. It opened in the US this past weekend and has had some solid reviews, with the Los Angeles Times saying ‘this movie is either in your wheelhouse or it's not, but for those looking forward to Book Club, it delivers. For what it is — a breezy bit of Nancy Meyers-like fantasy, featuring four beloved actresses talking about sex, baby — it's exceedingly enjoyable.’ It’s in UK cinemas on 1 June.
Across The Pond
Deadpool 2 couldn’t quite top the first film in the US either, opening with $126m, which is just behind the record breaking $132.4m the first one opened with two years ago. Avengers: Infinity War fell to second, adding $29.4m for a new total of $596m. All-star comedy Book Club opened in third with $13.6m and the audience was 80% female and 88% over 35, with 60% over the age of 50. Life of the Party fell to fourth, adding $7.6m for a new total of $31m. Breaking In completed the top five, adding $6.8m for a new total of $29.1m.
