Box Office Round-up

Elemental opened in first place with £3m, which includes £106k from 297 previews. According to Comscore’s PostTrak exit poll, the film achieved 4.5 stars from all audiences and an 88% Total Positive rating among the General & Parents audience, rising to 91% among Kids. 31% of Kids said they would buy toys related to the film, and 30% would watch the film again at the cinema.

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny came in second with £3m, bringing its total up to £13.1m, and only just reaching what Crystal Skull grossed at in its opening weekend. James Mangold’s entry in the franchise is currently ranking as the director’s third-best performing film, 4% behind The Wolverine (£13.7m) and 45% away from Logan (£23.8m). The Harrison Ford action-adventure is on the cusp of entering the Top 10 chart of 2023 releases, just behind Dungeons And Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (£13.6m).

Insidious: The Red Door takes the third spot, opening with £2.2m across 486 locations. Being the 5th film in the franchise, it has been the 2nd most successful in its opening weekend: Insidious (2011) grossed at £1.4m, Insidious Chapter 2 (2013) grossed at £2.8m, Insidious Chapter 3 (2015) grossed at £1.4m and Insidious: The Last Key (2018) grossed at £1.8m. Perhaps the inclusion of the original cast is bringing back the nostalgic horror genre that has been missing from the schedule. Patrick Wilson’s directorial debut picked up 3 stars in Comscores PostTrak survey, along with a 74% Total Positive rating overall and 82% for Males 25+.

Outside of the top 3, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse saw a 37% decline this week with £964k contributing to a total gross of £27.7m. The Little Mermaid saw a 42% drop with £490k, which now brings it to £25.9m. Asteroid City also saw a 42% drop with £460k, making it’s total at £3.8m, which is only £300k off of Wes Anderson’s last film’s total (The French Dispatch). The rest of the top 10 include No Hard Feelings, Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken, Transformers Rise of the Beasts and The Flash.

The Buzz

The first trailer for Napoleon was released yesterday. Coming to cinemas on 22 November, the film is an original and personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte's origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. This film has a strong cast featuring Joaquin Phoenix as our main character, and it’s directed by Ridley Scott who’s known for his critically acclaimed work namely Alien & The Martian.  Although distributed by Apple TV, Napoleon (& Killers of the Flower Moon) is getting an exclusive theatrical release before it’s available on streaming services, proving again how much distributors rely on the cinematic environment for robust viewing figures & perceived quality of film.
