Box Office Round-up

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves opened in the top spot with a strong £3.5m (including £185k from previews), the fifth highest opening weekend of the year so far. This is the second time that Dungeons & Dragons has been brought to the big screen with 2001’s ill fated attempt grossing just £2.1m at the box office over its entire run. This the Easter school holidays kicking off today, D&D: HAT will be looking at finishing its run with a final total over £10m. Comscore’s PostTrak exit polling saw the title receive 4.5 stars and a total positive rating of 88% from the General & Parents audience, with 56% stating they would definitely recommend the title to their friends.

John Wick: Chapter 4 posted a strong hold in second, adding £2.6m, a drop of 46% from last weekend. That takes its total after 11 days in cinemas to £10.1m and over the next couple of days it will overtake the final total of John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum finished on £10.4m, setting a series best total.

Family animation Mummies opened in third with £648k. Families have been starved of big screen content since the release of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish two months ago, and while it’s likely to be overshadowed by The Super Mario Bros. Movie when it hits cinemas on Wednesday, with the school holidays taking place for the next couple of weeks there’s still room for a smaller title like Mummies.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods fell to fourth adding £469k, a drop of 57% from last weekend. That takes its total after 17 days in cinemas to £4.9m. While it’s been a disappointing run for the DC Comics title, it’s one of the younger playing comic book titles so will hopefully provide a decent option during the school holidays.

Creed III completed the top five, adding £427k, a drop of 42% from last weekend. That takes its total to £13.5m and it has now grossed £3.5m more than Creed II.

Outside of the top five, UK comedy Rye Lane posted a terrific hold in 10th, falling just 17% to £125k and a new total of £825k. It looks like it should get to £1m before the end of its run.

The box office is down 7% from last weekend and down 29% from the same weekend last year.

The Buzz

Evil Dead Rise is a brand new story in the popular horror series. It’s a twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. It premiered at SXSW last month to very positive reviews, particularly for this kind of film. IGN gave it 9 out of 10 saying it ‘delivers all the gore you’d expect with a measured dose of the humor that makes this series a fan favorite’. IndieWire said the director ‘summons all of the best aspects of the franchise, while still creating a beast all his own that can boldly stand apart from the series.’ Variety were equally positive saying there’s ‘an abundance of bloody mayhem that increases exponentially until a hugely satisfying and splatterific climax.’ It’s in cinemas on 21 April and is one of the best films for 16-34s in Q2.

Across The Pond
