The Weekend Round-up

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom continued to take a big bite out of the pockets of cinemagoers this week, topping the box office with £7.2m, although this came at a drop of 50%. The film has now reached a total of £25.6m and leapfrogged Solo’s box office total. Solo may have shot first, but Jurassic World is here to remind Disney not to get cocky. Deadpool 2 is the film’s next target, and Jurassic World looks to comfortably be the second biggest film of Q2, below the untouchable Avengers: Infinity War.

Hereditary flew straight in at number 2 in this week, with an impressive opening week total of £1.86m. This is way off of It’s opening total of £10m, but is close to the £2.8m opening of 2018’s other breakout horror hit, A Quiet Place.

Solo: A Star Wars Story added £972.7k in third place, taking its total to £18m. With the runaway success of infinity War and the solid totals of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Deadpool 2Solo: A Star Wars Story looks to be living up to its name as the lone blockbuster box office disappointment of Q2.

Deadpool 2 is clinging onto the top 5 by a cable, adding a respectable £874.7k in its fifth week to come in at number four. This takes the film’s total to £30.6m, which is still a way off the original’s final total of £39.9m.

Completing the top 5 is Race 3, a sunny Bollywood title revolving around a family vindictive to the core, which earned an opening week total of £783k. Never underestimate the power of Bollywood.

Avengers: Infinity War added a further £408.5k to take its total over the £70m mark. The Marvel blockbuster has fully cemented its place as the 10thhighest grossing film in UK box office history, and has Beauty and the Beast’s number 9 spot in its sights – the movie will need to pass the £72m mark to topple the beast (and the beauty).

Outside of the top five, children’s titles Sherlock Gnomes and Show Dogs added £404.9k and £226.7k respectively, with the former showing an increase of 34% week on week.

Overall, the box office is down 11% from last weekend, and ranks 30th out of the latest 52 weekends. It is 120% up versus the same weekend last year, which saw openings of Churchill and Gifted, while Wonder Woman completed its third weekend at No.1 with £1.8m.
