Box Office Round-up
Fast X raced to the top spot with £5.9m, the fourth biggest opening weekend of the year so far. The last film in the series, Fast 9 opened with £6m in 2021 but that was from four days, having opened on a Thursday. It’s Friday to Sunday total was £4.9m in 2021 and it finished its run with £16.5m, so Fast X will be looking at a final total north of that, particularly with the schools off next week.
After two weekends in the top spot, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 fell to second but still held up pretty well in the face of Fast X. The MCU blockbuster added £2.8m, a drop of 47% from last weekend. That takes its total to £28.9m and it has now overtaken the total of the first Guardians Of The Galaxy film, which finished with £28.6m in 2014. In terms of recent Marvel films it’s now just over £5m behind the final total of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which finished its run with £34.4m. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 might be very close to that figure after half-term week.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie fell to third on its seventh weekend adding £544k, a drop of 37% from last weekend. That takes its total to a huge £51.8m and in terms of the biggest animated films, it’s now just £2m behind Frozen II, the fourth biggest animated film of all-time, with a final total of £53.8m.
Coming of age comedy-drama, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is an adaptation of Judy Blume’s seminal novel and it opened this weekend with £327k, which includes £40k from previews. Director Kelly Fremon Craig made a lovely coming of age movie in 2016 called Edge Of Seventeen and that opened with £273k on its way to £541k. Hopefully Are You There God? holds up better and Comscore’s PostTrak survey suggests it might with Parents and Kids awarding the film 5 stars, and the General audience giving it 4 stars.
Another new entry completed the top five as Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid launched with £231k, which includes £29k from previews. This is Aster’s third film to hit UK cinemas and at three hours is his longest. He’s making a name for himself with arduous, terrifying films and his previous two, Hereditary and Midsommar, opened with £1.9m and £811k respectively.
Outside the top five, event cinema returned to the top 10 as Don Giovanni – Met Opera 2023 opened in ninth with a smidgen under £100k.
