The Weekend Round-up

  • Frozen II held on to the top spot for a third weekend, adding £4.4m. That takes its total to £33.7m and it’s now the eighth biggest film of 2019 to date, having overtaken Downton Abbey in ninth in the last week. Over the next week or so, it should overtake Spider-Man: Far From Home (£37m) and Aladdin (£37.2m) to take the sixth spot. It’s also now less than £10m away from the first Frozen’s final total.
  • Knives Out stayed in second, posting a terrific hold – falling just 27% to £1.6m. Word of mouth is clearly very strong on this excellent whodunnit. That takes its total to £6m and if it can hold on to some screens over the Christmas period, it could get to £10m.
  • Last Christmas posted an even better hold than Knives Out, falling just 20% to £1. as rewarded as it finally knocked Joker from the top spot with £2.7m. Recent comparisons are not obvious due to the lack of big Christmas romantic comedies this decade, but earlier this year a romantic comedy launched featuring the music of a legendary 20th century recording artist or band and Yesterday kicked off its run with £2.1m on its way to £13.8m. It held up strongly week-to office hit ever in the UK.
  • Les Miserables: The Staged Play is a brand new event cinema release and on Monday it broke the record for the highest ever one-night gross for a live event. It added a further £947k across the weekend and has now banked over £3.2m.
  • Blue Story completed the top five and cemented its reputation as one of the year’s surprise hits. It added £379k for a new total of £3.7m.
  • Outside of the top five, Motherless Brooklyn opened with £154k in eighth.

Overall the box office is down 40% from last weekend and down 2% from the same weekend last year when the top films were Ralph Breaks The Internet, The Grinch, Creed 2 and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald.

Next Weekend

  • Jumanji: The Next Level is the sequel to the 2017 blockbuster. In this new story, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to rescue one of their own, the players will have to brave parts unknown from arid deserts to snowy mountains, to escape the world's most dangerous game. It is in cinemas on Wednesday after previewing at the weekend.
  • Black Christmas is a festive horror about a group of female students who are stalked by a stranger during their Christmas break. That is until the young sorority pledges discover that the killer is part of an underground college conspiracy. It’s in cinemas on Thursday.

The Buzz

Wonder Woman 1984 is the sequel to DC Comics’ 2016 hit. Gal Gadot returns as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman and in this new adventure she takes on one of her most famous adversaries, Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. Chris Pine is also set to return as Steve Trevor. The new trailer launched last night at CCXP in Sao Paulo and it’s a knockout. It’s all set to be one of the biggest comic book films of 2020 and you can see the new trailer here: https://youtu.be/pjoLeM25tAs.

Across The Pond

Frozen II made it three weeks at the top in the US too, as it fell 60% to $34.7m for a new total of $337.6m. It’s now the seventh biggest film of the year in the US. Knives Out came in second, falling 47% to $14.2m, which takes its total to $63.5m. At the moment, it’s too close to separate Ford V Ferrari and Queen & Slim in third and fourth, with both adding $6.5m. That takes the racing drama’s total to $91.1m. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood completed the top five, adding $5.2m for a new total of $43.1m.
