The Weekend Round-up

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 stayed in the top spot for a second successive week, falling 54% to £6.1m.

That brings its total to £27.4m and after 10 days it is already the fifth biggest film of 2017 to date, and it’s certain to overtake three of the films in the list above it. The first film finished on £28.5m, which the sequel should overtake before the end of the week and it has a decent chance of becoming Marvel’s highest performing non-Avengers title, which is currently Iron Man 3 on £37m.

Soppy canine drama, A Dog’s Purpose, was this week’s highest new entry, opening in second with £1.3m. It was boosted by bank holiday weekend preview figures of £667k, so its Friday to Sunday total was £632k.

Fast & Furious 8 fell to third, adding £816k, which takes it over the £28m mark. It’s now on £28.1m and is currently the fourth biggest film of 2017, behind Beauty and the Beast, La La Land and Sing.

The Boss Baby fell to fourth, tumbling 49% to £664k. That was enough to take it past Trolls and across the £25m mark. It now sits on £25.6m, making it the seventh biggest film of 2017 to date, with The LEGO Batman Movie in sixth on £27.1m in its sights.

Beauty and the Beast completed the top five, adding £419k for a gargantuan new total of £71.2m.

Outside of the top five, there were some modest new entries in sixth, eighth and ninth. Jamie Foxx thriller, Sleepless, was the strongest, opening with £369k, which included £28k from previews. British comedy, Mindhorn, opened in eighth with £280k, which included £95k from previews, and Noomi Rapace espionage thriller, Unlocked, opened in ninth with £258k.

Overall the box office was down 42% from last weekend and up 3% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book, Bad Neighbours 2 and Florence Foster Jenkins.

Next Weekend

Alien: Covenant is Ridley Scott’s latest terrifying excursion into the world of his most famous film. The crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape. DCM’s Anastasia Takis was at the premiere last week and said the film was ‘brilliant’.

Miss Sloane stars Jessica Chastain as the most sought after and formidable lobbyist in D.C, who, when taking on the most powerful opponent of her career, she finds winning may come at too high a price. Chastain was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance, but the film did not get the Oscars recognition it was hoping for.

The Buzz

A Ghost Story was one of the most warmly received films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It is also one of the films coming over to London for the London offshoot of the festival. In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife. Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara reunite with Ain’t Them Bodies Saints director, David Lowery, who more recently directed Pete’s Dragon. It currently has a score of 89 on Metacritic, with The Playlist saying, ‘A Ghost Story is absolutely mesmerising, with an anything-goes quality that’s endlessly fascinating.’ It’s out in the UK on 18 August.
