Box Office Round-up
Please note: for some inexplicable reason Ne Zha 2’s weekend box office is classed as previews (despite starting on Friday) so it does not appear in this weekend’s chart, and will be a new entry next weekend.
Mickey 17 held on to the top spot at the UK box office by a whisker, as it added £1.2m on its second weekend, a healthy drop of 42% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £4.5m, and at the same stage in its run, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, another ambitious sci-fi, was up to £4.2m, so Mickey 17 is tracking ahead of that.
Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy stayed in second, but only just, adding £1.2m, a drop of 42% from last weekend. That takes its total after five weekends in cinemas to a huge £42.9m. It’s now the second highest grossing Bridget Jones film, having surpassed Bridget Jones’s Diary, which finished on £42.1m. Only Bridget Jones’s Baby is ahead, with £48.3m.
Black Bag is the latest thriller from Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s trilogy, Erin Brockovich, Traffic). It opened with £915k over the weekend, so it’s not replicating the success of his earlier blockbusters. In 2013, Soderbergh directed another star-led thriller in Side Effects, which opened with a very similar £905k, and finished its run just shy of £5m, so hopefully Black Bag can have similar legs.
Marching Powder added £564k on its second weekend, which takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £2.1m. Director, Nick Love and Danny Dyer have worked together many times, with their last films in cinemas being Outlaw in 2007, The Business in 2005, and The Football Factory in 2004. None of those films grossed more than £1.6m, so Marching Powder has already set a new best for the pair.
Captain America: Brave New World rounded out the top five, adding £395k, which takes it over the £17m mark to £17.4m. Two years ago, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania launched in mid-February and finished its run with £19.3m, so Captain America: Brave New World is edging towards that total.
Outside of the top five, Last Breath opened in seventh with £328k, which includes £16k from previews.
Next Weekend
Disney’s Snow White is the latest live-action adaptation of a classic Disney animation. Rachel Zegler plays one of the most iconic Disney characters, Snow White, a princess who joins forces with seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother, the Evil Queen.
The Alto Knights stars not one, but two Robert De Niros as Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, a pair of Italian Americans who were rivals for control of a major crime family in the mid-20th century. Genovese attempted to assassinate Costello in 1957, although Costello retired from the mob.
Flow recently won the Oscar for Best Animation, beating the likes of Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot. Cat is a solitary animal, but as its home is devastated by a great flood, he finds refuge on a boat populated by various species and will have to team up with them despite their differences.
The Buzz
With Snow White in cinemas from Friday, the next classic Disney animation to receive the live-action treatment will be Lilo & Stitch. Originally released in 2002, this has grown to become one of Disney’s most popular films of the 21st century, and is particularly strong when it comes to merchandising. Lilo is a young and parentless girl who adopts a 'dog' from the local pound, completely unaware that it's Stitch, supposedly a dangerous scientific experiment that's taken refuge on Earth and is now hiding from its creator and those who see it as a menace. The latest trailer launched last week and has become Disney’s second most-watched live action trailer, with 158m views in the first 24 hours. It should be one of the biggest films of the summer and one of the best ways to reach a HP & CH audience across this period.
Across The Pond
On a quiet weekend ahead of the release of Snow White, Novocaine opened in the top spot with $8.7m. Last week’s top film, Mickey 17, fell to second, adding $7.5m for a new total of $33.3m. Black Bag opened in third with $7.5m, while Captain America: Brave New World added $5.5m in fourth for a new total of $185.4m. Rounding out the top five is The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which opened with $3.2m.
