The Weekend Round-up

Hotel Transylvania 2 opened in the top spot with £6.3m. That figure includes £3.5m from previews from the previous two weekends, but even so, its weekend total of £2.8m would still have been enough to top the box office. This is a real success story, as the first Hotel Transylvania managed £8.3m over its entire run and with half term week still to come, the second instalment should add a fair bit more too.

Suffragette opened in second with £2.9m, which included £1.4m from previews. It looks like its unusual Monday release strategy has paid off, as the Friday to Sunday opening of £1.5m is comfortably ahead of Pride’s £718k debut from last year and just ahead of Philomena’s £1.5m opening weekend.

Pan opened in third with £2.7m, which included £1.1m from previews. This is a solid start for a film which should do well next week when the schools are out.

After topping the box office for the previous two weekends, The Martian fell to fourth but it’s total of £2.4m was more than both Suffragette and Pan managed from Friday to Sunday. The Ridley Scott sci-fi has now grossed £17.5m.

Crimson Peak opened in fifth with £967k, while outside of the top five, The Lobster opened in ninth with £230k, which included £10k from previews, and The Program opened in fourteenth with £144k (including £26k from previews).

Overall, the box office was up 90% from last weekend and up 33% from the same weekend last year, when the top four spots were taken by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gone Girl, Annabelle and The Maze Runner.

Next Weekend

Vin Diesel fantasy-adventure The Last Witch Hunter opens nationwide on Wednesday (21 October). Diesel stars as, you’ve guessed it, the last witch hunter and is all that stands between humanity and the combined forces of the most horrifying witches in history. Michael Caine, Rose Leslie and Frodo Baggins are in the supporting cast.

Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension also opens on Wednesday and is the sixth film to be released in the series. It will be hoping to capitalise on the Halloween crowd's thirst for scares.

Mississippi Grind stars Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds as two gamblers trying to turn their fortunes around. It currently has an impressive score of 77 on Metacritic, and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were responsible for the Oscar-nominated Half Nelson.

Paper Planes is an Australian family film about a young Australian boy's passion for flight and his challenge to compete in the World Paper Plane Championships in Japan. Starring Sam Worthington, it’s been a hit in Australia where it grossed over $7m.

A little known film called SPECTRE opens on Monday, 26 October. Please do try and seek it out.

The Buzz

Steve Jobs had its UK premiere as the closing night gala of the 59th BFI London Film Festival last Sunday, 18 October. It’s currently a front-runner for next year’s awards, with Michael Fassbender expected to get his first Best Actor Oscar nomination. It also has a score of 81 on Metacritic, which is befitting an awards heavyweight.

Across The Pond

Goosebumps knocked The Martian from the top of the box office, opening with $23.6m. It opens in the UK on 5 February. The Martian fell to second but added $21.3m for a strong cume of $143.6m. Steven Spielberg's Cold War thriller, Bridge of Spies opened in third with $15.4m and Crimson Peak opened in fourth with $13.1m. Hotel Transylvania 2 completed the top five, adding $12.6m for a cume of $136.8m.
