The Weekend Round-up

Transformers: The Last Knight knocked Wonder Woman off the top of the box office, opening with £4.6m, which includes £743k from Thursday previews.

That’s the least impressive opening for a Transformers film, with the last film, Age of Extinction, opening with £11.8m, although that included six days of previews after opening on a Saturday. The film prior to that, Dark of the Moon, opened with £10.7m, which included two days of previews. Age of Extinction finished its run on £19.5m, so The Last Knight will have to hold well over the coming weeks to get close to that.

After three weeks in the top spot, Wonder Woman fell to second but had another terrific hold, falling just 16% to £1.6m. That brings its total to over £18.8m and it’s now certain for a total north of £20m. This week it will overtake the final total of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which finished on £19.3m.

The Mummy had a solid hold in third, falling 35% to £762k. That brings its total to £7.6m.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge had an even better hold than Wonder Woman, falling just 7% from last weekend to £685k. That brings its total to £18.5m and it too has a chance at hitting £20m.

In fifth, Baywatch was another title that had a great hold, falling just 12% to £452k. That brings its total to £8.8m.

Outside of the top five, Hampstead opened in fifth with £454k. That’s a slow start but with the core audience for this title likely to have said goodbye to work many years ago, it should have a stronger midweek performance.

On a weekend where the holdovers performed strongly, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul was the strongest of the lot, increasing its weekend take by 25% to £254k. That brings its total to £5.4m.

Overall the box office was up 67% from last weekend and down 36% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were The Secret Life Of Pets, Independence Day: Resurgence, The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case and Me Before You.

Next Weekend

Baby Driver is the latest film British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End). Ansel Elgort stars as a getaway driver who, after being coerced into working for a crime boss, finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail. It co-stars Lily James, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx and has been receiving rave reviews, currently scoring an outstanding 84 on Metacritic.

Despicable Me 3 is the third film in the hugely popular animated franchise. This time around Gru meets his long-lost charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother Dru who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist. Both Despicable Me 2 and Minions have grossed over £47m in the UK.

The House stars comedy heavyweights Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler as parents who start an illegal casino in their friend’s basement after they spend their daughter's college fund.

All Eyez On Me tells the true and untold story of prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur. It has so far grossed $38.6m in the US.

The Buzz

War for the Planet of the Apes is the (reportedly) final part in this re-booted sci-fi trilogy. It has become one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful sci-fi series of recent years, with the last film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, grossing £32.9m in the UK. This latest instalment is out in the UK on Tuesday, 11 July and has been receiving strong reviews from UK critics, with The Guardian, The Telegraph, Hey U Guys and Empire giving it four stars, while Den of Geek gave it the full five stars.

Across the Pond

Transformers: The Last Knight topped the box office in the US, but it’s five day opening weekend of $68.5m was way down on the $100m three day opening weekend of the last instalment, Age of Extinction. Wonder Woman had another great hold, adding $24.9m. It has now grossed $318.1m, which means that it has already outgrossed Man of Steel and it should overtake both Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice this week. Cars 3 fell to third, adding $24m, which brings its total to $98.7m. 47 Meters Down had a good hold, falling 34% to $7.4m, which brings its total to $24m. All Eyez On Me completed the top five, falling a whopping 78% to $5.9m, which brings its total to $38.6m.
