The Weekend Round-up

Doctor Strange is the latest Marvel behemoth and kicked off its run with £9.3m. After opening on Tuesday, it added £3.8m from Tuesday to Thursday, but its Friday to Sunday total of £5.5m is the biggest for an original, non-sequel Marvel title, eclipsing Guardians of the Galaxy, which opened with £5m in 2014.

Last week’s number one, Trolls, fell to second but increased its weekend take from last weekend by 8% to £3.3m (once previews are removed). It has now grossed £14m and had a great half term, banking over £8.5m in the last seven days.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back fell one place to third, adding £1.3m and has now banked £5.6m. It looks like it will fall short of the first film’s £9.5m, but it’s still a solid performance.

The Girl On The Train had another strong weekend, falling 39% to £1.2m. That was enough for it to cross the £20m mark and it now sits on £20.4m, a terrific result.

Bridget Jones’s Baby completed the top five and in adding £673k it now sits on £46.2, just behind the biggest film of the year, The Jungle Book, also on £46.2m. This week it will overtake The Jungle Book to become the biggest film of the year to date.

Outside of the top five, to coincide with Diwali Bollywood title Ae Dil Hai Mushkil opened with £617k.

In eleventh, the Palme d’Or winning I, Daniel Blake had a great result, increasing 18% to £476k (once previews are removed). It has now grossed £1.3m with more to come.

Overall the box office was up 21% from last weekend and down 59% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were SPECTREHotel Transylvania 2Pan and Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension.

Next Weekend

The Light Between Oceans was released on Tuesday and is directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond The Pines). It stars Michael Fassbender as a lighthouse keeper and his wife (Alicia Vikander) living off the coast of Western Australia who raise a baby they rescue from an adrift rowboat.

The Accountant is an action-thrilller from Gavin O’Connor, the director of the excellent Warrior. Ben Affleck stars as a math savant who uncooks the books for a new client, but as the Treasury Department closes in on his activities and the body count starts to rise. It has banked over $61m in the US to date.

A Street Cat Named Bob is a comedy drama starring Luke Treadaway. Based on the international best-selling book, it’s the true story of how James Bowen, a busker and recovering drug addict, had his life transformed when he met a stray ginger cat.

Nocturnal Animals is the second film from fashion designer Tom Ford (A Single Man) and a contender for next year’s major awards. Amy Adams stars as an art gallery owner who is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.

The Buzz

Following the assassination of her husband, First Lady Kennedy fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband's historic legacy.
