The Weekend Round-up
- I’m thinking he’s back! John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum opened in the top spot, kicking off with £3.6m, which includes £851k from previews having opened on Wednesday. The first John Wick film opened with £540k in 2015, on its way to a final total of £1.6m, John Wick: Chapter Two saw significant uplift, opening with £2.2m (including £248k from previews) in 2017 and now this third film has seen significant uplift on that. Where will the highly likely John Wick: Chapter 4 get to?
- Pokemon Detective Pikachu fell to second but posted a solid hold, falling 45% to £2.7m. It’s Friday to Sunday total of £2.72m was the biggest of the weekend, just £6,610 ahead of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. After 10 days in cinemas, Pokemon Detective Pikachu is now up to £8.9m and with half-term next week it should add a fair bit more. In terms of recent video game adaptations, it has now overtaken the final total of last year’s Tomb Raider (£7.7m) and it will shortly overtake the final total of Rampage, which finished on £9m.
- The biggest film of 2019, Avengers: Endgame came in third this weekend, falling 49% to £2.2m. That takes its total to £84m and it has now overtake Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s final total of £83.9m to become the fifth biggest film of all-time in the UK. Next on the list is Avatar on £93.6m which looks to be out of reach for Endgame.
- The Hustle posted the best hold in the top 10 this weekend, falling just 24% to £793k. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £2.3m. This time last year, Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty was in cinemas and attracting a similar audience and that film finished on £5.5m, which looks out of reach for The Hustle.
- Paw Patrol Mighty Pups completed the top five, opening with £522k. This is by far the biggest opening for a Paw Patrol film to date, with the last cinema outing for the characters, Paw Patrol: Big Screen Takeover only opening with £40k.
- Outside of the top five, Long Shot in sixth is now over the £2m mark on £2.3m and Beats opened in 12th with £98k (including £26k from previews).
Overall the box office is down 11% from last weekend and down 36% from the same weekend last year when the top films were Deadpool 2, Avengers: Infinity War, Sherlock Gnomes and I Feel Pretty.
