The Weekend Round-up

  • Joker topped the box office for a remarkable sixth week, a feat not achieved by a film since Avatar.  The DC blockbuster added £1.7m over the weekend, a drop of just 32% from last weekend, which takes its total to £54.3m and it is now the highest grossing 15-cert film of all time, having overtaken the final total of The Full Monty (£52.2m). It also now looks likely to overtake The Dark Knight Rises (£56.3m) before the end of its run to become the number one DC film and the third highest grossing comic book film ever, behind only Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame
  • The Aeronauts was this weekend’s highest new entry but was boosted by previews after opening on Monday. It has posted a seven-day total of £1m, of which £473k is from Monday to Thursday. Last time Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne were in a film together it was The Theory Of Everything which finished its run with £21.7m. The Aeronauts won’t be getting near that figure.
  • Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil added another £1m, a drop of 46%, which was enough for third. That takes its total to £13.1m and it’s now the third biggest live-action film that Angelina Jolie has starred in, behind Maleficent (£19.5m) and Mr. And Mrs. Smith (£13.6m), which it should overtake in the next week.
  • After posting a stunning hold last weekend The Addams Family took something of a tumble this weekend, falling 55% to £1m. It only added £281k from Monday to Thursday last week, so it’s now up to £8.3m.
  • New entry The Good Liar completed the top five with £961k. The last time Sir Ian McKellen and director, Bill Condon collaborated was on Mr. Holmes, which opened with £741k on its way to £2.7m in 2015, so The Good Liar will be looking to beat that.
  • Outside of the top five, World War II action-drama Midway opened in sixth with £755k.

Overall the box office is down 25% from last weekend and down 45% from the same weekend last year when the top films were The Grinch, Bohemian Rhapsody, Widows and A Star Is Born.

Next Weekend

  • Last Christmas is this year’s big (hopefully) Christmas film. Emilia Clarke stars as Kate, a young woman subscribed to bad decisions, working as Santa's elf at a department store. However, she meets Tom there and her life takes a new turn. For Kate, it seems too good to be true.
  • Le Mans ’66 is the true story of American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles who battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford and challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Matt Damon and Christian Bale star.
  • Little Monsters is a horror-comedy about a washed-up musician who teams up with a teacher and a kids show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies. Lupita Nyong’o and Josh Gad star.
  • The Report is a true-life drama about idealistic Senate staffer Daniel J. Jones (Adam Driver), tasked by his boss to lead an investigation into the CIA's post 9/11 Detention and Interrogation Program and uncovers some shocking secrets.

The Buzz

Dark Waters is a true story about a corporate defence attorney (Mark Ruffalo) who takes on an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company that exposes a lengthy history of pollution. Directed by Todd Haynes (Carol) it has had its first screenings in the US and the responses have been very positive. Sasha Stone of Awards Daily tweeted ‘Dark Waters is incredibly strong, deeply loving. Wow.’ Scott Menzel of We Live Entertainment tweeted that it’s ‘deeply upsetting & incredibly powerful. An inspiring true story about one man’s fight to do what is right despite the odds being stacked against him.’ It’s in UK cinemas on 24 January.

Across The Pond

Midway topped the box office in the US, opening with $17.5m. Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep was expected to open in the top spot, but could only manage $14.1m, which was enough for second. Playing With Fire opened in third with $12.8m and Last Christmas opened in fourth with $11.6m.Terminator: Dark Fate completed the top five, adding $10.8m for a new total of $48.5m.
