The Weekend Round-up

Kong: Skull Island continued the blockbuster March by kicking off its run with £6.2m, which includes £615k from Thursday previews. That’s the fifth biggest opening weekend of the year to date, and compares favourably with it’s obvious comparative, 2014’s Godzilla, which opened with £6.4m, but that figure included £1.2m from previews, so Kong has a bigger Friday to Sunday total.

After its sensational start last weekend, Logan had a decent hold this weekend, falling 45% once previews are removed to £3.9m. That brings its total to a healthy £16.9m, and it is already the biggest solo Wolverine film, overtaking X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which finished on £16.4m.

The LEGO Batman Movie stayed in third, adding £820k, which brings its total to £26m.

Gurinder Chadha’s period drama Viceroy’s House had a decent hold in fourth, adding £573k, which brings its total to £2.4m. It will shortly overtake Pathe’s last film, A United Kingdom, which is currently on £2.5m.

Oscar winner, Moonlight, completed the top five, falling just 35% to £476k, which brings its total to £3.4m..

Outside of the top five, Fifty Shades Darker will overtake The Wolf Of Wall Street early this week, to become the second biggest 18-certificate film of all time in the UK, behind only Fifty Shades of Grey. It’s currently on £22.7m.

Overall the box office was down 16% from last weekend and up 16% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were Kung Fu Panda 3, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, London Has Fallen, and Deadpool.

Next Weekend

Beauty and the Beast is Disney’s live-action version of their classic animation. Emma Watson stars as a smart, independent woman who falls in love with a bison who imprisons her. It’s one of the great romances and it’s all set to be one of the biggest films of the year.

Get Out is the US box office sensation of 2017 so far. British actor, Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris, a young African-American man who visits his Caucasian girlfriend's mysterious family estate. After just three weekends on release in the US, it has grossed over $110m.

The Buzz

Baby Driver is the latest film from British director, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End) and stars Ansel Elgort as a young getaway driver who finds himself taking part in a heist that is doomed to fail. It premiered at SXSW festival in Austin, Texas at the weekend and has received rave reviews. Indiewire called it a ‘wildly successful romantic heist comedy’, while The Hollywood Reporter said ‘it will delight the director’s fans but requires no film-geek certification’. It’s out in the UK on 16 August.

Across The Pond

Kong: Skull Island topped the box office in the US too, kicking off its run with $61m. Logan fell to second but added $38.1m, for a new cume of $152.9m. It needs just $27m more to be the biggest solo Wolverine film. Get Out had another amazing hold in third, falling 27% to $20.7m and it has now banked $110.7m. The Shack added $10m in fourth, which takes its cume to $32.2m and The LEGO Batman Movie completed the top five, adding $7.6m for a new cume of $158.8m.
