The Weekend Round-up

The amazing performances keep on coming as Minions delivers the fifth opening over £10m so far this year, and it’s still only June. The Despicable Me spinoff kicked off its run with £11.6m, which would have been the biggest opening of 2014 but has to settle for fifth so far this year. This is however the biggest opening ever for an animated film (Friday to Monday). While Despicable Me 2 opened with £14.8m in 2013, that included £4.8m from previews, so it’s opening Friday to Sunday total was only £10m.

Jurassic World fell to second but still delivered a further £5.8m on its third weekend. It has now grossed a huge £48.9m and has overtaken Avengers: Age Of Ultron to become the biggest film of 2015 so far, a title it will likely hold until a certain Mr. Bond makes an appearance in October.

Spy continued to perform strongly on its fourth weekend, having the best hold of any film in the top 10 (not including Secret Cinema). It added £630k and has now grossed a strong £8.6m.

Mr. Holmes stayed in fourth, adding another £397k and after ten days in cinemas has grossed £1.7m.

Secret Cinema’s The Empire Strikes Back completed the top five, with £276k and after four weeks, it has grossed £1.4m.

Outside of the top five, Keanu Reeves' thriller Knock Knock opened in seventh with £251k.

Overall, the box office was up 22% from last weekend and up a chunky 82% from the same weekend last year when the biggest films were Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie, The Fault In Our Stars, 22 Jump Street and Maleficent.

Next Weekend

After Jurassic World, another series that saw its peak in the 90s makes a comeback on Thursday, as Terminator: Genisys is released. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back and the film throws in multiple timelines, not all of it successful, in an attempt to try and get the series back on track.

Magic Mike XXL is the sequel to one of 2012’s breakout hits. Channing Tatum returns and the hope is that the series has grown in popularity since the first one, much like Pitch Perfect. Distributor Universal have done little wrong so far this year so another strong result is likely.

Amy is the latest documentary from Senna director, Asif Kapadia. By all accounts, it’s heartbreaking.

The Buzz

When Ted was released in August 2012 it quickly became a sensation, grossing over £30m in the UK alone, making it one of the most successful comedies of all time. The sequel opens in the UK on 8 July but it opened in the US last Friday. Rather disappointingly, it would appear that interest in the foul-mouthed bear has waned somewhat in the last few years, as it’s $33.5m opening is considerably less than the first film’s $54.4m debut.

Across The Pond

Jurassic World held on to the top spot for the third consecutive weekend, adding $54.5m and becoming the first film since Avengers Assemble in 2012 to cross the $500m mark. It’s now the fifth highest grossing film of all time in the US and should have the legs to climb at least one place higher in that list. Inside Out held on to second spot, adding $52.3m for an impressive cume of $185.1m. Ted 2 opened in third but it’s total of $33.5m was a disappointment. Canine drama Max took fourth with $12.2m and Spy completed the top five with the best hold in the top 10, falling just 31% to $88.5m.
