The Weekend Round-up

All-star heist caper Ocean’s 8 strutted in to the top 10 and took its place at the top of the table, opening with £4.3m, which included £2m from previews after opening on Monday. The previous title in the Ocean’s franchise, Ocean’s Thirteen, opened in June 2007 with £3m on its way to a final total of £13.4m. A more recent comparison would be 2016’s Ghostbusters, which had an all-female lead cast and opened with £4.4m, which included £1.7m from previews.

After topping the box office for the last two weekends, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom fell to second but still posted the biggest Friday to Sunday total of the weekend. It added £3.2m, which takes its total to £31.2m and it’s now the fifth film this year to gross over £30m at the UK box office.

Hereditary had a solid hold in third, falling 47% to £834k. That takes its total to £3.7m and it has already far outperformed similarly smart horror films, It Follows (£1.2m),The Witch (£1.2m) and The Babadook (£1.3m).

Deadpool 2 came in fourth, adding £455k, a drop of 48% from last weekend. That takes its total to £31.5m and it’s the fifth biggest film if 2018 to date, although it will be overtaken by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in the next couple of days.

Solo: A Star Wars Story completed the top five, adding £375k which takes its total to £18.7m. It looks like it will fall short of £20m, which would have been almost unthinkable before its release.

Outside of the top five, The Happy Prince expanded to more screens and increased on last weekend’s total by 53% to £151k. That takes its total to £318k.

Overall, the box office was down 25% from last weekend and up 2% from the same weekend last year, when the top films were Transformers: The Last Knight, Wonder Woman, The Mummy and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge.

Next Weekend

Sicario 2: Soldado is a sequel to the Oscar-nominated thriller from 2015. The drug war on the US-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) re-teams with the mercurial Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro).

Tag is a comedy about a small group of former classmates who organise an elaborate, annual game of tag that requires some to travel all over the country. It stars Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, Jake Johnson, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner.

Adrift is a true story of survival, as a young couple's chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin star.

The Bookshop is set in a small town in 1959 England, and tells the story of a woman who decides, against polite but ruthless local opposition, to open a bookshop, a decision which becomes a political minefield. The classy cast includes Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson and Bill Nighy.

Patrick is a family comedy about Sarah, a young woman whose life is in a bit of a mess. The last thing she needs is someone else to look after. Yet, like it or not, her Grandmother has bequeathed her a very spoiled pug - Patrick. It stars Beattie Edmondson, Jennifer Saunders and Ed Skrein.

Incredibles 2 is well on the way to being the biggest animated film of all time in the US, after just 10 days on release it has already grossed $350.4m putting it in the top 10 biggest animated films of all time. If it gets to $486.3m, which seems pretty inevitable, it will overtake Finding Dory to be the biggest. It’s out in the UK on 13 July.

Across The Pond
